- Snowball's adventureBarnet, United Kingdom7,260 contributionsNeo Renaissance Train StationTo be honest, our first impression of Zurich HB station wasn't great, possibly due to it's not as grand as we thought it would be and it's under refurbishment during the 2 years (2022 & 2023) we visited. However, we grew to love it after a few visits. It's clean, it's big (got 3 levels of train platforms), it has got everything too (shops, Coop, cafes, Tourist information, lockers...etc) and it's located at the heart of Zurich. In the winter, we heard that the ground floor would be filled with various Xmas festive stalls as well. More importantly, we loved to get on the Swiss Trains so we gradually loved coming to this station too. Can't wait to come back next year, the year after, & many years to come!!!Visited June 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten May 12, 2024
- Sherpa5993089 contributionsEasy to access and use and to shop and eatLocated in the heart of Zurich, easy access to locations in the city and all over Europe. Very helpful staff throughout the building, look for bright yellow vests if you need help finding your train. There is a multilevel mall directly below the top level of the the station with great food and shopping, and it is open on Sundays.Visited July 2024Traveled on businessWritten July 10, 2024
- VadimMurmansk, Russia35,041 contributionsThe sixth train station in Europe.Zurich Main Station is the most important transfer hub not only for Switzerland, but also for the whole of central Europe, as trains from Germany, France, the Netherlands to Italy pass through Zurich. It is the sixth train station in Europe in terms of traffic after Paris Gare du Nord, German Hamburg, Frankfurt and London Waterloo and Victoria stations. 155 million passengers pass through it every year. It's like if every Swiss from the Middle-aged to the elderly used the train station 17 times. The station is open almost around the clock due to the availability of night trains, closing only for 2 hours from half past one in the morning to half past four in the morning. There are 26 tracks at the station, through which 3,000 trains pass daily. Every 25 seconds. The station building itself with the triumphal arch was built in 1871 and is an architectural landmark being a striking example of Neo-Renaissance architecture. On the ground level there are 16 railway tracks and the main entrance hall of the station. I used the luggage room, 6 hours costs 5-6 francs depending on the season. The pedestrian crossings and the ShopVille shopping gallery are located one level below. There are 10 underground platforms on the lowest level. In general, it is a large, beautiful, convenient train station.Visited September 2023Traveled soloWritten August 18, 2024
- Angelo SHilliard, Ohio5,976 contributionsCentral Hub in ZurichA central transportation hub linking the local tram and bus system to the airport and longer-haul trains to other cities and countries. A large amount of bicycle parking and a large taxi stand on one side of the station. Large central board to track arrivals and departures, the station is very easy to navigate. A covered space but mostly open sides allow the noises of the city to interact with the bustle of the station. Beside the staffed ticket office, automated machines, and a tourist center, there are a couple of restaurants, a small grocery, and a few shops. There is also some event space which (when we were there) was being set up for a small Oktoberfest-type festival.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten October 11, 2024
- Luciana MSao Paulo, SP193 contributionsIt's worth the walk until you go to take pictures. Tourist Information Center is essential! The Zurich Hauptbahnhof is sensational. In fact it is huge, all the trains from Switzerland pass by here so if you plan to make your train trip there it is best to try to make a way that departs from Zurich to go to other places. The station itself is worth visiting to take pictures. There is also everything for the Traveler not to get in hand, restaurants, take away snacks and a Migrolino (which is the Migros version for travel). Very well signalled and there is always someone on the platforms to help you find what you need or guide you on the trains. Very clean too. You have the Tourist Information right at the main entrance and, even if you have no doubt about any tour you go to make, pass this place even if it is to pick up the Map of Zurich that has in all languages, including Portuguese, will help you enormously and it is free. The staff who gives you the information are always attentive and help you from understanding how to get to the places as well as removing doubts about how to get to the places and how to consult times and platforms of departures and arrivals of trains and help you understand the transportation. The Morning staff is smarter so if you need more detailed information choose to go in the morning.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten October 15, 2024
- permia67,105 contributionsWhat a StationWhat a wonderful main station it is. A grand Neo Classical frontage leads in to an ornate central hall. Hardly any need to say that everything works like clockwork here. As we discovered to meeting expectations, with many journeys from and to it.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten December 29, 2024

I visited this building in more than one occasions including to visit Lucerne. The worker here are very helpful and pleasant. The system to buy tickets is well organised and this train station provides washroom ...at a cost of course. . I think in paid 2 euros which I found high. Overall it's a lively and beautifu, and veey busyl train station.

This is the main train station in Zurich. The historical building, with its grand facade and a large clock tower along with a beautiful fountain just outside, has magnificent architecture.
The Station has many shops, restaurants and cafes on the upper and lower floors to cater for train passengers wishing to buy their daily needs. The Station is not far (about 10 minutes walk) from the tram station where many tourist tours commence.
The station is well-connected to different parts of Switzerland and to other European cities. The ticketing office on the upper floor has well trained staff who can also speak in English. They helped us save money by introducing us to day train passes.

Today, Zurich Hauptbanhof central railway station is the largest in Switzerland with the city's central location in the continent historically making it a railway hub. It currently serves over 2,000 trains per day, making it one of the busiest in the entire world. The station is built near the old town part of Zurich, called the Altstadt, at the confluence of the Limmat and Sihl Rivers. Numerous shops inside the station in the underground subway and excellent street food like jumbo hot dogs sold on take-away stall on the platform .

This is just our anecdote.
I offer a caution about this station based upon a recent episode my wife and I experienced during our three day visit to Zurich.
the station itself is fine; clean with places to get refreshments, seats for waiting, and clean toilets. the problem for non-german speakers like us is that the Swiss train does not seem to make accommodations for tourists.
we had tickets to mannlichen via grindlewald. we made it to the train station forty minutes before the train, struggled to find the correct platform because the signs were only in German, and after confirming the location (by searching and. asking several people). went down to join the other passengers, the platform signboard indicated that our train would be arriving in five minutes. suddenly we noticed that the people who had been waiting with us were going upstairs. we looked at the signboard and noticed that our train had disappeared.
we followed other upstairs to the main signboard and our train was not on it. We heard a series of announcements in German. we asked a woman what was happening and. she told us that our train had been cancelled due to an incident on the tracks. she said she took the train every day and this was the first time this had happened and the next train might be available in two hours. not good enough to make onward connections.
our bad luck, could happen to anyone and has happened to us before in 20 years of tourism; however, in our experience, after visits to several other European cities such as Paris, Berlin. Vienna, Madrid and Rome, we never encountered a situation where announcements, either through the PA system or a signboard was not offered in English.

The train station itself is nice, but buying a ticket there is tedious and, above all, very time-consuming. We landed in Zurich Kloten after a stay abroad and wanted to take the train from Zurich to Austria. It was not possible to buy a ticket from Zurich to Feldkirch (A) from the machine. Only within Switzerland. Then we queued for 20 minutes for a number at the ticket counter. Of the 6 counters, a maximum of 3 were occupied. So we had to wait another half an hour until the number was finally called.
It may be that the train station is nice and the shopping opportunities are good, but a train station should primarily be there for train travel.
So definitely buy your ticket online in advance.

Very easy to navigate - plenty of shops for food/gifts/clothes. Having to pay to use the WC is a bit tedious and unwelcome given this is such a popular station with a lot of throughput. Well signposted throughout and maintained cleanliness.

It being Switzerland’s largest and busiest was obvious on our early morning arrival. Bustling with arrivals, departures and passengers over a few levels, it's easy to see why it is one of Europe's busiest.
Dating from 1871, the exterior was in the midst of a major renovation with much hoarding and builders’ paraphernalia surrounding it. So unfortunately wasn’t possible to completely take in the purported grandeur of the exterior design.

We used this station for boarding all the train for our outstation trips to Lucerne, Schaffhausen, Thun and other places. A very huge station with several entry and exit points. But easy to navigate and catch a train quickly.

This is a centrally located place near the Zurich Central Railway stations where there is an opportunity to tuck in street food around the world from Pakistan, Nepal, India, Sudan, Malasia, China etc. The place is crowded. It also sells various artefacts.

We arrived at Zurich station and it is a very busy place with many locals eating here during the day as the food is great and what a variety on offer. We easily found the information section which is really big and surprise - helpful. Christmas time here is wonderful and it is a perfect place to lauch into Zurich. City is not large and walking mostly is easy and public transport is really easy to use but taxis are outrageous so watch them here.

Hi I will be travelling to Zurich on August 2019 and would like to know about any recommended locations to stay in as I have an average budget for stay - I will be staying for Three Days. I prefer travelling through the city on foot or on train to reach tourist spots around Zurich. Any advice?
Written June 23, 2019
I would personally stay a mile or less from the train station if you would prefer to walk and ride. That being said if you have an average budget I would choose a place that offers complimentary breakfast. You will thank me later. I have travelled all over the world and Zurich is absurdly expensive. I am talking $16 for a value meal at Mcdonald's expensive. $5 for a cup of coffee expensive. For a point of reference, I did not find Paris expensive at all. Also, 3 days would be the absolute most time I would ever spend in Zurich. It is incredibly dry and non eventful. It has some high points...But very few.

You may try Arlette Beim HB, Leoneck Swiss Hotel, Royal Hotel Zurich. They all have AC facility in rooms and will fit in $200 budget.

I would like to know which is the best rail service to travel in Europe . Is there any detailed website for first time travelers. to plan
Written January 19, 2019
before considering taking the train on your journey, you have to list first your priority. as for me:
1. i dont prefer train as it takes longer than airplane.
2. the rate of the train is almost same rate of the airplane
3. not much to see while on train.
4. make a comparison between train and airplane
if you are travelling on a tight schedule or if you want to maximize your trip, i would suggest go for airplane rather than train.
