This is a real, fully-functional observatory built over 100 years ago, with a relatively large telescope and two smaller ones on either side. A presentation was given by an actual professor of astrophysics and we took it in turns to use the telescopes to observe distant objects. The professor rotated the dome as well as the viewing platform at times to adjust to the telescope's orientation - not something you see every day.
It was impressive even considering that there was still daylight and it was a cloudy day. It must be fantastic in the wintertime on a dark, clear night. The tours are usually in German but once in a while they do one in English, so check before you go.
Honestly I'd give this five stars if not for their ticketing partner, EventFrog, which is a nightmare. It's only in French/German, very confusing, and at times doesn't work at all (e.g. the link to the online ticket stopped working a while ago, and the PDF download link wasn't working a day before the event, so good thing I had downloaded it beforehand).
There is also the Jules Verne panoramic bar but this was closed at the time of my visit. I suppose it would have been nice as well. You can still enjoy views of the city from the observatory itself.

There are paid public tours given in the evenings (if there is clear weather). Tours on Thursday - Saturday evenings 21:00 - 22:00 hrs.
The telescope is a two lens system allowing for 600-fold magnification. Interesting to visit.

I lovedmy visit to the observatory. The fact that we were able to use a telescope made 105 years ago and it works so well... We saw mercury (rare opportunity), the moon, Saturn ... The guide is this great amateur who has a passion for what he does. If you love astronomy, please visit

The Observatory is very close to the town's main street, Bahnhofstrasse. It offers an amazing view of the town and a decent cup of coffee with pastry. Recommended to all tourists visiting Zurich for the 1st time.

Incredible surrounding view of Zurich from the observatory. Bad points where that we had to endure at least an hour of Deutsch explanations of the planets and the sun and moon, with only about 10% of it being translated into english for us. Then at the end of the presentation it was too cloudly to see anything :(

Enter through the restaurant. Up the elevator to the bar and observatory floor. Great views late in the day or early evening.

You get an amazing view of the city from the observatory, even if you don't get too much of a view of the stars due to clouds. They open some nights and give a guided tour and talk of the observatory and let you look out of the telescope etc...

the bar on top is very small, but a very lovely place to have one of the best panoramas over zürich. go there during day as its really overcrowded with after-work guests.

Enjoy watching the moon at the Urania Sternwarte or have a great view on the city and the lake from the Jules Verne Bar on the top floor! Enjoy a nice drink.

Worth a visit for every youngster. I dont know any other place that allows you to look through a 20 ton telescope and see Venus, Mars and Saturn. During summer the show goes on till quite late (past 10pm) to eat and go.
