If you're visiting Zurich in the summer, you'll want to pack swimming gear. Many of the shops are closed for extended periods in July and August. Beside that simple fact, the Swiss are an active folk, and swimming is something they love.
In Zurich you can always find people at Oberer Letten, behind the Landesmuseum a little down the Limmat. The food at the kiosk isn't cheap, but rather delicious and worth indulging in if you're there all day. You can also bring your own food and drink. Get a place on the wooden dock or up in the grass. Go up to Dynamo, jump off the bridge and float down the river to the Letten again, or play volleyball on the sand courts.
The people here tend to be very attractive and tattooed. Don't be intimidated, they don't bite... In fact they might not even notice you there. Afterwards, head to the Viadukt market for a beer at the Mouse Trap Pub, or focaccia at Saltin Bocca. But remember, bring your swim gear and enjoy the turquoise Limmat and its current. The perfect place to cool off, enjoy life and see what the residents of Zurich do in the summer. And swimming here is 100% free.

In my opinion the attractiveness of this place depends a bit on what you want to do. However it is definitely a cool place to hang out with friends in the summer; there are volleyball courts, bars, places you can lie down to sunbath and of course there's the river. I always like to walk all the way up to the brindge, jump down from there and then let myself carry down by the river. It's a good place to swim against the stream.

Straight in the city centre, you reach this place in 10 min on foot from the Hauptbahnhof walking through the Heimatsmuseum gardens and the Spitzplatz park, where the Sihl river joins the Limmatt. There at the very tip take the bridge to the right and follow the Limmat's sidewalk, along the flow of the water on the right-hand side up to almost the Kornhausbrucke (Kornhaus Bridge). You'll pass some arts workshop and then you'll find the river bath, consisting of wooden piers and a grass lawn just beside the river. Just put down your towel anywhere on the piers or the grass and jump in! On the other side, reachable through the Kornhaus bridge, there's a more extensive two-floored wooden bath, also with sun beds, open in the summer season (not free).
There is a kiosk for food and beverages, there are toilets nearby (under the Kornhaus Bridge), there are arts workshops & a restaurant on the way along the river.
For swimming the place is very good in summer. The water is refreshing but not cold then. The current is very moderate, so a decent swimmer has no problem going upriver. However, many prefer to just walk upriver and take to the water near the bridge from the Spitzplatz park, then swim with the current or simply float back. As you wish!
A nice and popular extra is a beach volley field.
It can get a bit crowded in the hot summer weekends. However, one finds always a place, in my experience. Enjoy!

For someone who grew up at the beach, I find Letten a complete joke. There are far better places to go swimming in Zürich. Go to Greifensee or to the lake at Rapperswil, far far better.

Letten is like a canal bordered by grey concrete walls on both sides and water flowing through it. Why in the world would locals like this place amazes me? It's just one of the places to be seen ... for locals only. When it gets busy the place is absolutely packed and you lie side by side with locals like in a can of sardines.

Also please be careful. There are no life guards and no one will save you. Remember that swimming in fresh water is far different from swimming in the sea, it's hard to stay afloat. I know of someone who drowned here and despite the cries for help, no one came to his rescue. He passed away...

What a great experience, our hotel did not have a pool, it was a hot summer day and we needed something refreshing, this is something that we have always wanted to try in the past, this time we did and it was awesome. This activity is very popular among locals in Switzerland.

Tips: Swimming in the river is very safe, if you feel insecure doing it, bring a life jacket, since there are chains and ladders all along the channel, but I would recommend being at least 2 people, The current is not very strong but strong enough for not being able to do Treading water swimming and catch the same ladder, let yourself be carried by the current and catch the next ladder to get out, this why it's nice to be accompanied by a 2nd person they can wait for you at the 2nd ladder with your towel and sandals. If we would have been a little younger, we would have jumped from the bridge like the kids do.

Along the channel there is some bar and restaurant which is nice to take a pause.

This something I would recommend for everyone to try at least once in their life, it is pretty exciting and fun that you will want to do it twice. It also makes a good souvenir when watching documentaries about Switzerland. So go for it and HAVE FUN.

If you'd like to cool down on hot summer days in Zurich this is a great option. It is for free, you can just walk up, jump in and let the river take care of the rest.
Howerver, it does get too crowded. If you don't mind that it is definitely a nice place to go to and a great alternative to the lake of Zurich (which is crowded too anyway)

Flussbad Obere Letten is another busy spot on the Limmat for swimming and sun bathing. This deck has a cement floor and has changing rooms, lockers, restrooms, a connected bar/café, so it has facilities compared to just across the Limmat. This is also the exit location for the popular summer Limmatschwimm. This section seems to be for the more mature audience and daily swimmers where the opposite side is a bit younger and offers more activities.

When summer gets really hot in Zurich (aropund 10 days a year), the Limmat is the wright place to cool down. A trendy Bar serves drinks and snacks - here meets young Zurich for a relaxing afterwork drink and swim.
