Winterthur has 3 very relevant art museums. Oskar-Reinhardt has its collection split between the excellent "Am Romerholz" Villa and the city center located Musem. Tha also has a number of significant masterpieces and also hosts temporary exibitions. If you have time, the Musuem pass will help you reducing the costs and taking advantage of the Museum bus you will also be able to travel freely among the locations. Not to be missed.

There are two such museums in Winterthur, one 'am Romerholz' in a magnificent house on a hill, and full of Impressionist paintings and those artists which led to that movement. It has a restaurant for light meals and the very drinkable local wine. The other is 'am Stadtgarten', in town full of Swiss painters who are largely unknown in the UK but whose effect is remarkable and well worth a visit. You can just dream your way around and come out on a cloud!

They have all periods of art at this museum but I went to see the Van Gogh's and Hodler's. And I was rewarded with a rich collection of impressionistic, expressionistic and modern art.
Winterthur has 4 fantastic art museums and a couple of smaller ones. There's the Sammlung Oskar Reinhart and Romerholz, the Kuntsmuseum, the Oskar Reihart Foundation Museum and the Villa Flora musem. All have great art, including my favorite period of art from 1850-1950. There's not another city in Switzerland with this many art museums. But only one of these allows photos so take along a good memory or buy a book because it's alot of art.

If you need to chose just one museum in Winterthur this would not be my choice. The museum in the center of the city has a very good location and good facilities, but its collection of Swiss and German art cannot rival with the art in other museums in the city - it's too big and repetitive. There may be a public interested in this art and the periods and genres covered there - but for the art lovers who are not familiar with Swiss art it's a challenge, especially as all explanations are in German only.

A few paintings (Hodler) and the miniatures were fun to see. Otherwise a lot of mediocre paintings not worth the day trip from Lucerne to see. The Clock Museum in town was much better. The special exhibit in September 2016 was not exciting. Apparently the best holdings are by advanced reservation only?

Unique chance to see a large part (80 works) of the personal collection of Christoph Blocher, Works of Swiss artists around 1900: Anker, Hodler etc. A MUST, and worth a travel to Winterthur!!! Attention: lasts only until January 2016

I visited with friends on a rainy day largely drawn by the advertised 'big name' artists but it transpires almost all of those works were out on loan. Nevertheless the collection was interesting and varied and mainly consisted of works by Swiss artists I'd never heard of them so we certainly learned a lot.
An enjoyable couple of hours, my main gripe was they should either reduce the entrance fee or make it clear on entry when the advertised famous works are not on show.

Do not miss this fine collection. Get a musueum pass for the day and see especially the Am Römerholz Reinhart musuem up the hill. There is a free bus. Very interesting art in the musuem in town, but more masterpieces in the Am Römerholz venue.

The more famous Collection Oskar Reinhart Am Romerholz was closed when we were in Winterthur, so we stopped at the Museum Oskar Reinhart Am Stadtgarten. This collection is almost all Swiss, German and Austrian paintings up to the early 20th century. It was surprisingly good, in our view, and quite extensive, but does not focus much on the expressionist movement starting with die Brucke and like movements.
