About
Hold your breath and board this train that climbs, climbs, and climbs some more. Nothing scares it, neither the steep slopes nor the snow. At the Rochers-de-Naye, at over 2,000 metres altitude, what amazing scenery! Lake Geneva in all its glory. Don’t leave the place without saying hello to the marmots, the mascot of the Alps. A tip: it is said that this is where the real Santa Claus spends the winter.

Beautiful Train to the top
Oct 2021 • Friends
Our tour guide mentioned this and we decided to enjoy the train ride up on Sunday! Beautiful scenery to enjoy! Ride up then down on different sides to see it all! Many tunnels through the mountains and stunning views of the mountains and Montreux below! We saw folks hiking as well!

Side note… it was cold and windy at the top!

Place to get a snack.

Some folks stop at Caux de Haute ( Ck that first) for lunch.

Amazing Views!
Sep 2021 • Couples
The train ride was pretty full, but the views are amazing from both sides of the train, so don't worry. The train winds it's way up the mountain making several stops along the way. You are able to hop off and on as you please. Once to the top, that view is AMAZING! It is like being on top of the world. The view of Lake Geneva is so beautiful. We were fortunate to go on a very clear day.

We thought we could hike back down to Montreux because the sign said 2 hours and 50 minutes! We didn't have the proper shoes, hiking poles, or anything for that hike. It was so steep! We only made it half way down and then caught the train the rest of the way. I don't want others to confuse that with a leisurely stroll. There may be other trails, so try those.

My favorite thing to do in Montreux
Aug 2021 • Couples
The train ride up was full of breath taking views of Lake Geneva and Montreux. Once you are at the top there are several hiking trails you can take from very easy to difficult. The restaurant at the top was a perfect place to have a fondue lunch. My suggestion would be to try to go on a cloud free day. Our views were hampered by clouds.

A must do if in the Montreau area
Jul 2021
This must be one of most spectacular and breathtaking excursions we have taken to date in Switzerland. The train journey itself , which takes 50 minutes , provides the most amazing views of Lake Geneva and the surrounding mountains as it winds its way to just under 2000m . Once at the station there are many opportunities to meander around to see some Alpine gardens, marmots or take some breath taking wanderweg routes

Trip worth making
Jul 2020 • Family
About an hour by cog rail from Montreux to the top. Stunning scenery along the way and at the top. Unfortunately the last train back down was at 1:20 as it would have been nice to walk around for a few hours.
Would be worth walking up from one of the stations along the way for the scenery and vegetation.
The restaurant was surprisingly good with a variety of choice and very efficient fast service.

I actually visited this in late October 2018, but my review should still be solid.

I saw les Rochers-de-Naye in the afternoon after visiting le Château de Chillon in the morning. I would plan to take out the whole afternoon (or morning if you prefer) and I calculate that from the time you leave the designated train station in Montreux, to the time you get back to it. I remember buying my ticket, so I don't think it was covered by the Montreux card that gave you discounts/no cost (free). I was on a budget and could afford it, so it can't have been a lot.

The train is great and the landscape is beautiful. If I recall rightly, the train stopped once or twice, purely for us to soak in the view and/or take photos. You see animals as you wind along the cog railway and stop at stations on the way. The climb is gradual but steady, allowing you to get used to the altitude. Once at the top, there's plenty of places for you to scramble around and explore, but do be mindful of when the train leaves back to Montreux, especially if it's the last one! There are toilets at the summit.

For me, the weather was perfect, there was snow on the mountains, sunny and clear and the clouds were 'sitting' in the valleys. You could still see Montreux, happily.

One of the few times I have been foolish, but my common sense just managed to prevail, just. I decided to walk down, back to Montreux. I did have trainers, trousers and a t-shirt on and when I asked the café at the top where the track was and how long it would take, she asked if I had walking gear - I said 'no' and she saw what I was wearing and said I should be fine. I found the track, and being set on walking down, I scrambled, literally for what seemed like a long time, but was probably max 20 minutes.

When my mind told me what I was doing was actually dangerous and if I had an accident, it would end badly, I, again, literally scrambled back to safe ground and hopped on the last train back down to Montreux - I can't remember the last time I was so stupid in the last ten years, but there you go - rent gear from the summit or have your own.

A great day trip from Geneva
Jun 2019
Worth it for the cog wheel train from Montreaux alone, but the view from the top across the heights and the lake below is amazing. Don't forget to visit the alpine garden just a short walk from the cafe to see a sizeable collection of alpines.

Must do!
Feb 2020 • Couples
This was a fantastic trip and was worth it for the train journey alone. It was a complete contrast from the warm and sunny weather down in Montreux, which came as a complete surprise. As it was Valentine's Day, we treated ourselves to a lovely half litre bottle of local white wine in the restaurant while admiring the view. The price was a nice surprise as well; being no more expensive than restaurants down town. The food menu was quite good and reasonably priced also. We would have eaten there if we had not filled up on breakfast at the hotel before embarking on this trip. I would highly recommend a trip there, especially if you have the Montreux travel pass, which entitles you to 50% off the train fare.

Scary cog wheel train ride
Feb 2020
Depends on your tolerance of altitude and steepness. This little. Cog railway clings to the steepest mountain sides and through tunnels, corkscrewing along and climbing really steeply. Winter destination at the top, nsurrounded by skiers, very basic cafe at 2,000 metres, as you might expect. Makes a nice round trip

Super for a short trip from montreux
Dec 2019 • Family
Great place to go for a short trip from Montreaux or lausanne. Lot of snow on top during winter. The train trip is also very scenic all along and you get to see the splendid lake from up above.

During the christmas period they have a santa village with an option to meet santa.

It would be a great option to combine the santa village and the Montreaux christmas market as a day trip for kids.
