Overview
More
The Gornergrat (3,089 m) is one of those places that everyone should visit at least once in a lifetime. The mountain panorama and the glorious view of the Matterhorn are unforgettable. With its sunny observation platform accessible all year, the Gornergrat, at an altitude of 3,089 m, has been one of Switzerland’s top excursion destinations since 1898. The Gornergrat Bahn was the world’s first fully electrified cog railway. Today it is a modern, eco-friendly railway, equipped with a regenerative braking system that generates electricity on the descent and so saves energy. All year: •Photo subject: 29 mountains above 4,000 m in view (Switzerland, Italy) •Shops •Restaurants: self-service and waiter-served, indoors and out •Large sun terrace •“Bernhard von Aosta” chapel •Panoramic viewing platform Summer: •Wild ibex near the viewing platform of the station •Starting point for hikes •Sunrise trips (bookable offer) •Sunset dinners (bookable offer) •For families: “Wolli and the climate detectives” (audio guides available from Zermatt Tourism and the Gornergrat Bahn cog railway) Winter: •Dining with the stars (bookable offer) •Moonlight visit (bookable offer) •Direct access to the pistes and winter hiking paths •Highest sledging slope in Switzerland (Rotenboden 2815 m - Riffelberg 2582 m) •Igloo village on 2727 m

Actually,my husband and I thought this was just a tad overrated. We're mostly into hiking and took the train as far as the Riffelberg. Cost 66CHF one way to this point for the both of us. Honestly, once you see the Matterhorn, the views don't...More

This place is very good for trucking and hiking activities. St the top point you can see the full view of glacier filled Alps mountain range. Good place for family with young children. The most attractive part is the Panoramic train travel to and from.

The Gornergrat RR was a joy - new equipment and very secure rides with new, wonderful views unfolding at every turn. We stayed up there for 3 hours just soaking in the sights. We took a picnic lunch, easily available from the local Zermatt Migros...More

We revisited the Gorneragrat in late June 2017 hoping to see the Matterhorn this time. We did and the other views are still as magnificent as I described in my last review in July 16. This was NOT an included trip this time and costs...More

For all of the times that you have seen the Matterhorn on TV, in movies, and at Disney World - nothing will compare to the feeling that you have when you're actually there. Trust me ... it might be slightly pricey but the experience is...More

Train rides here are not cheap but what a spectacular place with an incredible view of multiple glaciers and hikes. We could see our peak of the Breithorn that we were climbing the next day. In fact, we loved this place so much we visited...More

I would imagine its quite expensive to use this railway , but it was part of our package. Its worth it for the views of the Matterhorn and glaciers, but it is all a bit worn out. Maybe its better in the snow. Apart from...More

There wasn't any snow at the top of the Gornergrat but if you do the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise trip there was plenty of snow there. Free toboggan rides too! See my review of it. Hope you enjoy your trip.

Unless the children have a respiratory illness I don't see why there should be a problem. They will love the train ride up the mountain. There were lots of kids everywhere hiking and visiting shops. They should enjoy the... More

We were there May13 of this year. Took the 10 am train. I think morning is nice but the weather changes quickly up there so its always a guess at best.
