About
The sunny corner of Zermatt From the train station you will reach the Sunnegga-Rothornvalley station by foot in five minutes. Taking the undergroundn funicular you will ascend to 2,288 metres (7,506 ft) in just four and a half minutes and arrive at Sunnegga, the “sunny corner” of Zermatt. From the spacious sun terrace of the restaurant, you enjoy a wonderful view of the Matterhorn. Wolli playground Leisee At Leisee lake, families can enjoy an adventure playground with attractive barbecue areas and a water feature. Your children can explore the play area while you relax in the idyllic lakeside surroundings and contemplate the amazing views of the Matterhorn. Take a refreshing dip in the lake, or play Robinson Crusoe as you cross the water on a wooden raft attached to a cable that spans the lake. Off to the land of adventure! Kickbiking on Sunnegga The extremely popular kickbikes can be hired at the SunneggaRothorn valley station (helmet included). From there it’s a thrill a minute as you speed downhill to Tuftern and on to Zermatt. There are various restaurants along the way where you can stop for a breather before continuing back to the valley station to return your kickbikes.

Jun 16: Post our morning trip to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, post lunch we decided to go to Sunnegga. The ride up from Zermatt is via a funicular. This is a marvel - they have cut through the mountain for a steep incline funicular to reach the top of Sunnegga from Zermatt. The ride is less than 5 minutes. Once out of the station, you are presented with a wonderful view of the Matterhorn. While we didnt eat at the restaurant, one can sit having a drink and enjoy a clear view of the mountain. There is a large area (few steps below) where one can relax on the greens. There is also a lake below for which you have to take the lift to go down.

I went during the summer. You need to pay 20 swiss francs to get to Sunnegga using a tram. It has a very stunning view of Matterhorn and some good hiking trails. It is not worth your money if you just wanna look at Matterhorn during the summer.

Terrible client service. We asked for return tickets on the funicular with the 50pc discount with the half price card. They scanned our cards and then asked for payment. They didn’t give us tickets and assured us all was added to the swisspass cards. On returning we found we were blocked at the turnstile. We were then accused of being cheats as we had only single tickets. We said this was wrong and we had asked for return ticketswhen buying (in English and German). We were just shouted at and told to buy another single ticket. We asked to speak to the supervisor and they refused to get anyone else, refused to even offer the lower price difference between a single and return (which most places would have done).
We then found after exiting the ticket seller who had sold the tickets who refused to acknowledge or correct their error.
So CHF 19 per person (with half price) for two 4 minute funicular rides.
There are better places to go nearby but if you really want to go to Sunnegga then insist they give you actual tickets so you can check before leaving the counter or video on your phone the transaction so you have video evidence.

Awful, crowded subterranean train, sometimes with long lines when all other lifts close down due to weather. It takes us to some mediocre or worse slopes, again very crowded. Not to mention that I could not avoid thinking when few years back a similar contraption in Austria burned down, with all the passengers inside. I prefer to get on the slopes in ski lifts.

As first timers to skiing we were strongly advised to start off on the “kid friendly” slopes of Sunnegga which seemed like good advice. For the uninitiated, the climbs (up and down) to board the furnicular that takes you to Sunnegga are a challenge in ski boots, carrying skis and poles and one which could be avoided by starting off at any of the novice centres on the line to Gornergrat. Once we reached the Wolli Park beginners slopes, via another “bubble car”, the ratio of adult : child learners posed a further challenge as, ability level aside, we were constantly afraid of skiing into the mass of children who were just trying to learn as well. To be fair, as a family friendly location, I am sure Sunnegga is a great destination, but for adult novices, I would suggest you check out the alternatives.

Went there for lunch. Obviously it was packed but we soon found a table.
We were a bit disappointed by the variety of food. I just had the feeling it was meat with chips or pasta. However the salad buffet was very nice.
Prices at the top end for a self service (even in comparison to the restaurants nearby) and unfortunately no children's portions.

To get up to Sunnegga you must take a funicular railway inside the mountain. What a surprise, followed by a walkout to the snows and ski trails back down to other lifts and gondolas. All amazing if you are used to North American ski hills.

Short train ride from Zermatt. 21chf roundtrip. Nice place to have a drink and enjoy the Matterhorn view. The restaurant is self-service. We went down to Wolli park for the kids to enjoy more snow. It was awesome!

Hello - i am planning to do the 5 lakes hike in September this year. We plan to drive in from Visp to the funicular station. Is there parking at this station? If not, please let me know where i can park?

Hi there,
It is not possible to drive to the funicular station. Funicular station is located in zermatt (a car free village) and you have to park your car elsewhere (I believe the closest parking station is Tasch). from Tasch, you can catch a train to Zermatt station. and from Zermatt station, you can either walk to the funicular station (Sunnegga Rothornvalley) around 5 minutes or you can also take an electric taxi just outside the train station. Hope it helps

Hello - I was just curious roughly how much it costs to ride the Funicular to the Sunnegga? Does this ticket include a ride to the top and back down to Zermatt, or is it a one way ticket? Also, is there additional costs/tickets needed to ride the lifts to Blauherd or Rothorn?
Thanks in advance!

Hi Dan, we did what Samara did. It was a beautiful day so the hiking was perfect. You can buy a one way or you can buy a return ticket which is a round trip ticket. You can check out the Zermatt website for more information. I highly recommend walking sticks for your hike. We rented ones there in Zermatt for about $10 each, they were very helpful.

Danielle D.

Hi, i'm thinking of doing a hiking holiday in Zermatt in October and was wondering what the average weather at the start of October is for the area? Hoping to use the trains and do some of the higher level trails. Are they likely to be snow covered? Any advice welcome.
Regards Carl.

Carl, the key in the Aps is be prepared! Don't expect snow but very cold and rainy could come your way - very unpredictable. Normally the weather forecast is quite accurate so pay attention to it too.

Im looking to take the family to Europe on a ski holiday and honestly have zero idea of whats on offer, the kids are 9 and 12, can ski good for Australian kids, ability whole mountain in Japan, looking for a European snow experience, really want to avoid party towns, love good food and service, money is not too much of an issue, no private jets but you know no all you can eat either. We are a non skiing family kids 6&10, so we went to Zermatt mainly to see the Matterhorn which was so very impressive, magnificent view of this from Sunegga. Would recommend taking the Glacier express from or to Zermatt the scenery along the way is simply awesome. Have you considered Grindelwald, we found this very family friendly and absolutely stunning in winter, fairy tale houses on either side of the valley, with plenty of skiing for all ages and a trip to Jungfraujoch is a must see absolutely breathtaking. Also St Johann in Austria was a great family friendly town with skiing areas and many more accessible by train In the Skiwelt area. We found travelling by train in Europe to be very easy, comfortable and the best way to see more of each country.

I'm sorry, I cannot tell you about the dinner buffet, but if it's like the breakfast buffet it should be fine. We found all food in Switzerland to be very expensive. I imagine you know this, but Switzerland is very expensive, Being from the US, we can usually count on finding at least one cheaper place to eat via fast food or something if we want that. There is nothing cheaper in Switzerland. A fast food hamburger was about $15.00 US. With that being said, we loved the hotel and everywhere we went.

The place won't be busy then. You might wanna walk to Findeln, either from zermatt or from Sunnegga. There is a nice lake called Leisee. Or you take the Gornergrat train! Most beautiful view.
