Terrible client service. We asked for return tickets on the funicular with the 50pc discount with the half price card. They scanned our cards and then asked for payment. They didn’t give us tickets and assured us all was added to the swisspass cards. On returning we found we were blocked at the turnstile. We were then accused of being cheats as we had only single tickets. We said this was wrong and we had asked for return ticketswhen buying (in English and German). We were just shouted at and told to buy another single ticket. We asked to speak to the supervisor and they refused to get anyone else, refused to even offer the lower price difference between a single and return (which most places would have done).

We then found after exiting the ticket seller who had sold the tickets who refused to acknowledge or correct their error.

So CHF 19 per person (with half price) for two 4 minute funicular rides.

There are better places to go nearby but if you really want to go to Sunnegga then insist they give you actual tickets so you can check before leaving the counter or video on your phone the transaction so you have video evidence.

Awful, crowded subterranean train, sometimes with long lines when all other lifts close down due to weather. It takes us to some mediocre or worse slopes, again very crowded. Not to mention that I could not avoid thinking when few years back a similar contraption in Austria burned down, with all the passengers inside. I prefer to get on the slopes in ski lifts.

As first timers to skiing we were strongly advised to start off on the “kid friendly” slopes of Sunnegga which seemed like good advice. For the uninitiated, the climbs (up and down) to board the furnicular that takes you to Sunnegga are a challenge in ski boots, carrying skis and poles and one which could be avoided by starting off at any of the novice centres on the line to Gornergrat. Once we reached the Wolli Park beginners slopes, via another “bubble car”, the ratio of adult : child learners posed a further challenge as, ability level aside, we were constantly afraid of skiing into the mass of children who were just trying to learn as well. To be fair, as a family friendly location, I am sure Sunnegga is a great destination, but for adult novices, I would suggest you check out the alternatives.

Went there for lunch. Obviously it was packed but we soon found a table.
We were a bit disappointed by the variety of food. I just had the feeling it was meat with chips or pasta. However the salad buffet was very nice.
Prices at the top end for a self service (even in comparison to the restaurants nearby) and unfortunately no children's portions.

Short train ride from Zermatt. 21chf roundtrip. Nice place to have a drink and enjoy the Matterhorn view. The restaurant is self-service. We went down to Wolli park for the kids to enjoy more snow. It was awesome!

To get up to Sunnegga you must take a funicular railway inside the mountain. What a surprise, followed by a walkout to the snows and ski trails back down to other lifts and gondolas. All amazing if you are used to North American ski hills.

The funicular up to Sunnegga Paradise is quite interesting. We had no idea that the entire thing was inside the mountain. Neat, but also a bit strange bc, well, no view.

We went up to Blauherd by Gondola and went off to the 5 Lakes hike (5-Seenweg). It was nice, but it wasn't spectacular. This might be because the Matterhorn was a bit shrouded by the time we got up there, or because it was windy so we couldn't get any cool reflection pix on any of the lakes. We found all 5 lakes, but one of them, Moosjisee, was just a hole in the ground. They're doing some sort of work on it.

The nicest lake was probably Grunsee bc there wasn't too much around it, development-wise.

We were moving quickly, and it took us 2 hours and 20 min, which includes some backtracking.

Some tips:
1. Trekking poles might be helpful. If you hike up from Sunnegga, it's all all uphill, and pretty tough. If you hike down from Blauherd, it's some serious downhill and you need to be careful.
2. Follow the signs carefully and know the order of the lakes (Stellisee, Grindjisee, Grunsee, Moosjisee, Leisee, in the downhill direction). We had a bit of trouble finding Grindjisee.
3. Go on a day where the weather is perfect so you can get those pix that are postcard worthy!
4. Make sure you buy the right lift tickets at the bottom. You want a one way on the Blauherd-Sunnegga, and a round trip on the Sunnegga-Zermatt funicular.

Everyone one knows about the Gornergrat cog train up towards the Matterhorn - which really is as good as everyone says. But in my view the coolest and easiest way to get fabulous view is via the Sunnegga funicula. Take a 10-minute leisurely walk from Zermatt Bahnhoff, past the Gornergrat cog train depot, and along the river to the funicula. This goes up through the mountain like a rocket for 5mins or so until you come out at Sunnegga where there's a lovely indoor/outdoor restaurant and a gorgeous viewing area of The Matterhorn

Sunnegga is a most wonderful place. Surrounded by many peaks and great view of Mattehorn. The best part is actually to get the lift to Sunnegga, change there and go straight to Blauherd. Than, you walk back (down) to Sunnega. This is the most picturesque walk around the 5 lakes. Crystal clear waters, perfect for a nice swim in a sunny day. Or just admiring the natural beauty. Stunning views on the way. Amazing reflection of Matterhorn in most of the lakes. The only problems are that there is no water or toilet around. The bathroom facilities are ONLY around the main stations. The walk also could be very challanging if you don't have enough training. People with knee or hip problems should not start the walk. It takes about 3 to 4 hours if you like to enjoy and take some pictures. You need to be well equipped with proper trainers(shoes) and good quantity of water. At the end, once you come back to Sunnega, the lift takes 3 min to take you down to Zermatt. Strongly recommended if the weather is good.
