Altstadt in Chur
Jan 2021 • Family
It's not worth traveling to Chur as a destination by itself. Altstadt in Chur has long parted way with its Old Town vibe. A whole bunch of Modern looking architecture.

fascinating paradise
Sep 2020

I hope I do this place justice but am neither a writer nor a poet, if I was, I would be surer of my abilities but at least let me try. I come for a beautiful country with tropical weather, green scenery, mountains, beaches and wild animals. I have seen the beauty of mother nature but this is paradise; I know many imagine paradise to be sunny, lined with palm trees, empty hammocks waiting for the tired travelers whilst being served cold drinks with tiny umbrellas and a few descendants of Aphrodite or was it Venus?.

Let me show you this paradise through my eyes. It is of apices and alleys. Not the ones you see in paintings as this cannot be imagined by a painter, if someone was responsible for creation this must be where they started. It looks like a first day's job, morning shift or a new project when you are excited about accomplishing something meaningful or even believe what you're doing will make a difference, leave a legacy. A lake welcomes you on the left before you enter a tunnel, blue clear waters, quiet watching, keeping the secret of what lies beyond but waiting for you to behold the beauty for yourself. As you drive further there are valleys of green grass sitting like spectators watching the mountains captivated by their beauty, the clouds seem to obey the mountains covering the peaks of some completely, other clouds on the peak are like smoke coming from inside the mountain. My son would say there is a fire breathing dragon inside emitting fire from its breath and the only evidence is the smoke rising but my imagination is long lost as I only see clouds rising from within the mountains obeying the magnificence of this paradise.

The small villages and the hiking trails are a site to behold, the roads take you high up and around these mountains like a new romance then slowly down the valleys like a caring lover. You can feel the altitude in your ears but your lungs are busy filling up with all the clean air, your eyes can't focus long enough on one spot as there is too much beauty and you're hungry to take it all in, store in your mental vault lest you forget. Am a tourist in this paradise and a refugee (long Story). I watch the trains dance around the mountains and some dare to touch the beauty by going through, she lets them. Its breathtaking.

Maybe am seeing this much beauty because of the calm, self-assured Swiss who brought me to this new paradise. Growing up here the magic behind the lake hidden away between two mountains isn't as intoxicating and having hiked this very mountains makes him forget its paradise. He's not completely oblivious to the beauty as I listen, the beautiful eyes behind the glasses light up, he describes driving through the clouds and watching them below your feet (cloud lake) he called it, with beautiful blue skies above. Alpine clouds Something I want to experience.

His house in Chur has a backdrop of a gigantic mountain of rock with trees and white skies dancing around the mountains top, like a labor-intensive painting but instead its a gift from mother nature. Medieval churches, castles, adventure trails, incredible hotels, golf courses, cable cars, ski slopes are just a piece of this paradise. Experience it and tell me about it through your eyes.

regards RG

Chur Old Town
Jul 2020
The Chur Old Town is very pretty, with a lot of old and interesting buildings, shops and restaurants. It is mostly a no-car zone making it a good area to stroll around with kids. One would be able to see the nice old cathedral with the huge open Platz in front of it. Some other interesting interest points are the Fontana Park, the Bear Hole, old gates Obertor and Untertor, St Martin Chruch and very interesting lanes with lots of history to offer.

One can reach the Chur Old Town from the Chur Station, walking up straight through the shopping street. One can also get down at Chur Altstadt station and enter the Altstadt directly through the Obertor when one is arriving in Chur with the RhB (Rhaetian Bhan) from Arosa.

Chur is the probably the oldest town in Switzerland and hence we found its Old town area well preserved as well as ideal for a day trip combined with Eating and Shopping.

Great Place To Chill
Feb 2020
We love the old town of Chur, it is such a nice place to wander and window shop, take in the parish church and then walk up to the cathedral. There are plenty of places to eat and drink. Just five minutes walk up the gentle hill from the main station through the main shopping street.

Swiss rail trip

A nice small town in Switzerland where you can take the Bernina Express through the mountains to Italy. The town has quite a few nice shops and restaurants and we found an amazing tapas bar. Superb.

Narrow and old streets! Lots of restaurants and cafes, lovely views of the mountains. Very nice people! It is worth staying a few days before taking the Berliner to the Alps!

The old town of Chur is exactly what it says old, walk around the back street and it’s difficult not to fall in love with this place. We only had a day, never really heard much about Chur don’t even know why I picked it for a stop off on our way to Como, but I’m so glad we did. The place just draws you in lots to do and see. Go and explore, it has a marvellous feel to it. The people are friendly helpful and even though I cannot speak a word of Swiss we managed to find people that spoke good English.

We were staying close to the Old Town Chur.
Lovely walking around the old town make sure you go down some of the side Ally ways, some of my favourite old buildings were down these narrow lanes.
Dome great places to sit back and have a drink or meal to soak up the old charm of Chur ⛪

Lovely way to spend a few hours.

Great spot to wander through lots of narrow streets with new things around each corner. Not overly large but we worked our way up the hill over the course of a couple of hours and then back down finding shops, churches and schools. A great way to spend a short time seeing an example of an old Swiss village.
