About
An impressive masterpiece of nature, the 300m deep Glacier Canyon was formed by the lower Grindelwald glacier, which over time carved its way through the rock in this area. Sadly the lower glacier no longer exists, but the canyon itself is now thriving as a popular destination for a unique sensory walk through its exposed rock galleries and tunnels. The rushing water cascades freely from the mountains into the Lutschine River below, sometimes causing a sudden rush of wind through the canyon and a rapid temperature flux as rays of light reflect along the steep walls. An interesting experience for all ages, the Glacier Canyon is an ideal, easy-access tourist destination. Its accessibility in all weather conditions also makes it a convenient stop for short tour programs. One of the highlights of this attraction is the 170 m2 SPIDERWEB which spans the canyon, providing visitors with a thrilling net platform to scramble, walk or crawl on, seven metres above the roaring Lutschine River.

The nearly 1km hike into the Glacier Gorge (Grindelwald) begins behind the Gletscherschlute Hotel and costs 7CHF per adult (6CHF with a hotel "guest card"). The hiking path (wanderweg) is clearly marked from Grindelwald and begins near the C and M Cafe. The gorge was formed by runoff from the glaciers above and boasts fast flowing waters and several impressive waterfalls. There is a walkway that is cantilevered off the gorge rock walls and also partially tunneled into the cliff that takes you ~1km into the gorge and then back where you started. Nature's raw force is evident by the roar of the rushing waters and the sheer depth of the gorge itself. An impressive site to see and good to visit on a rainy or cloudy day when mountain views are shrouded by the clouds. You can also hike the Marmorbruch trail to the top of the gorge for views down into the gorge and also see the remains of an old marble quarry.

The start of the gorge is at the Gletscherschlucht hotel, about 1.5Km from Grindelwald. The ravine is an impressive masterpiece created by nature, and is an interesting place to visit on a wet day when walking in the mountains is not possible. Pay for the gorge at the hotel, then take a narrow wooden gangway which allows you to walk almost 1 KM along the side of the 100m high gorge, which has been carved out by the melt waters of the Lower Grindelwald Glacier. In some sections tunnels have been created to allow you to go deeper into the gorge.
If you walk from the hotel up to the Pfingstegg, there are great views into the gorge from above, and if you feel really brave, there is even a platform for canyon jumpers.

Before coming to Gridenwald , I tried to extract the information on Glacier Gorge and it’s opening time but couldn’t gather any. So, when we went to Gridenwald in March 2016, we decided to visit and to gather more information so that others can get help in future. Accordingly, on a sunny day during our Easter holidays at Switzerland, we started from Brintz by Interlakhen-Lucern express at 10-25am and took train for Gridenwald fromt Interlakhen Ost at 11:15am It was a beautiful 20 mins journey, full of snow capped peaks and stunning natural beauty. We reached Gridenwald station, which I believe one of my best scenic station at 11:35am.
There was a tourist information centre at the station and after collecting the information , we came to know that Bus 22 goes there but the bus is at every 1 hr interval. They advised us that it was closed now, however, we could see it from the outside.
We took 11:55am bus no 22. In the midway, there was a beautiful spot where the glacier was visible at her best. The bus took only 12 mins to reach the stunning site of Glacier Gorge. There was a hotel named Gletscherschlucht and a path leads to footbridge and through rock galleries and tunnel.
We strolled in the area and found many little falls, the gorge was just besides a river. The ravine was a natural wonder.
Unfortunately the small glass building through which the access to the rock galleries and, balconies are there with aticket(8CHF or so- I forgot exact amount) was closed and a notice displayed there that this would be opened in mid June.May be next time we will try for it as it was really impressive. The walkways are just at the edge of the mountain and I am eager to see this in future.
Our return bus was at 1-30pm so we walked in the area and found lots of hiking routes. We could go only a little as the remaining paths were full of snow.
At 1-30pm, the bus 22 came and we went back to Gridenwald.
Overall, it was a wonderful trip and like to go again as I have more information now.

The Gletscherschlucht is worth a side trip when you are looking to add some variety to your Grindelwald visit. You walk along a series of catwalks, carved out pathways and tunnels up the very narrow gorge safely above the river below. It is almost worth the visit just to marvel at the pathway! The gorge is punctuated with the occasional small waterfall from the upper rim. The river drops quite a bit through this portion of the gorge so the water flow can be very impressive. Try to time your visit for maximum water flow (at the end of a warm day or if it has recently rained). You can reach the gorge by walking but the town bus is the way to go - especially if you visit at the end of a full day of hiking.

The canyon is definitely quite impressive.
They have done their best to make the attraction interesting. My kids really enjoyed jumping on the spiderweb, but the 19chf cost for adults is expensive and I think you can have many similarly interesting hiking experiences for free.
If the canyon trail took you up to the glacier and allowed you to walk on or experience the glacier, then maybe this would be more worth it.
In the end, I felt it was an interesting walk in an impressive canyon - but the cost did not feel right... I am glad I did it once.... but would not do it again...
In the end, for people that have the money and are not concerned about cost - this is definitely something to consider doing as it was an enjoyable walk and definitely something different.

This is a great place: they have cut a long path along the inside of the canyon that was formed by the glacier. The river is rushing below, and the atmosphere is really special. At one point they have the "spider's web" which is a net of thick-rope they've strung across the canyon that you can walk on. The Swiss seem to be really in to these kinds of faux-danger activities! On this one, I did actually find the sensation quite unnerving and thrilling (unlike, for example, the "tightrope walk" at Birg mountain). Of course, it's actually perfectly safe (although you could potentially lose an infant's shoe through the gaps, and you definitely need to be careful getting out your phone to snap a photo!). At various points the path goes through tunnels in the rock, and in one of them there is fresh glacier water gushing out of the side that you can drink. The walk is fascinating enough that my 4-year-old walked almost the whole way without complaining (about 1km to the end, and then back again). The only problem with this place is that it's hard to access without a car. There's a bus from Grindelwald station, but it only leaves every half an hour, so getting them without a car involved some hanging around.
One other thing: it's quite cold inside the canyon, much colder than outside. So even on a hot day, you might want a jumper or fleece.

This gorge may be nice, it is still completely overrated and overpriced. You will be charged as much as 19 swiss francs for the only 1 km long path across this gorge. Like in any other gorge, you will find along your way tunnels and panels, nothing else.
Though it is further away, I personaly recommend you to better go to the Rosenlaui gorge above beautiful Meiringen! In the latter you will only be charged 8 swiss francs and you will enjoy more impressive spots with crazy views inside. Check "Rosenlaui Glaciar Gorge" and "Haslital Tourism English" for details on the web.

You ride up inside the mountain to a mid-point along a walkway built into the gorge. The entire northern part of the Jungfrau basin drains through this one narrow canyon cut into the wall of the scenic Lauterbrunnen Valley. The thundering power of the cascading water is awe-inspiring. Do not miss this!

The walk to Glacier Canyon took us about 30 minutes from the Main Street. Beautiful houses along the way, don’t be afraid to speak to the locals walking by. Met a 80 year old Swiss man who was a sweetheart. Walking on plank boards, we made our way through the tunnel. We ventured out on the blue ropes to walk over the raging waters below. unbelievable how much water is flowing through. My husband is a civil engineer so he said he felt like he was on a dam examination. We had a wonderful time.

We walked from the centre of Grindelwald in about 35 minutes, returning after our visit to the canyon on the 122 bus, free of charge using the free visitor pass from our hotel. The entrance fee of 17CHF, discounted with the visitor pass, seemed a little expensive for a 1km walk along the fast moving river in the narrow canyon. However, the scenery and geology were magnificent with lots of photo opportunities. The "spider web" above the river was an unusual and fun way of experiencing the canyon. Information boards were helpful to understand how the canyon was formed and how the glacier has retreated significantly in the last 150 years. Our visit lasted 70 minutes. Extensive free parking and a restaurant are also there.

Hi
Your dog is welcome. You just need to be aware, that there are some gutters on the way, so your dog might be happier to stay at home 😉

Hi Nikita. The Glacier Canyon is located at Gletscherschlucht 1 in Grindelwald. This is about a 35 minute walk from the center of town, or you can connect using bus 122.

What is the weather like in the glacier Canyon in June? How many degrees is it? Want to know so I can pack appropriately.

Hi. It's about 10-15 degrees. It doesn't rain in the canyon, but sometimes there is water drigging on the rocks. A jacket is normally enough, if you wish you can also rent one on spot. We are looking forward to seeing you soon!
