Feel close to the mountain
Jun 2021 • Family
There is a lovely Café here with great hot chocolate. We caught the bus to here rather than walking as we were short on time and wanted to walk down to Rosenlaui Gorge. We walked back down along the trail that follows the road and you always know when the bus is coming around the tight corners with its honker that the kids love.

Relatively unexplored gem!
Sep 2019
There are so many fabulous hiking sites in the Berner Oberland that Grosse Scheidegg sometimes gets overlooked. There are two trails from Grosse Scheidegg to the First gondola station: (1) the Panoramaweg, and (2) Hohenweg 2400 (the mountain trail that parallels the paved and wide Panoramaweg). If you don't have any hiking limitations, I strongly recommend taking Hohenweg 2400. This mountain trail and the views are incredible. Besides traveling to First, there are several other trails starting from Grosse Scheidegg. Check out the optional trail to Chrinnenbogen that branches from Hohenweg 2400. Plan for about 90-100 minutes from Grosse Scheidegg to the First station (or reverse), and about 3 hours or a little more for a round-trip -- this is a great day-hike, and finish with a nice lunch at Hotel Grosse Scheidegg before catching the return bus to Grindelwald. Add about 40-45 minutes if you include the extension to Chrinnenbogen. Also, the bus ride up the winding one-lane road (from Grindelwald) is a kick in itself. Also, lunch on the sunny patio of Hotel/Restaurant Grosse Scheidegg is very worthwhile with good traditional Swiss food and great views of the mountains.

Hike First to rosse Scheidegg and back
Sep 2019
Great Home Made food, fresh salads (carrot, cabbage and green) not packaged salad and fresh home made salads sauce. I got the Wallisser Käseschnitte, grilled cheese on bread with ham and tomatoes. Enough calories to hike back to first again.

Great view

A bit touristy but definitely worthy of the view. Tons of great, green rolling hills. Also good for running and hiking.

Ride the train here and enjoy the views!
Sep 2019 • Friends
This is one of the most beautiful rides you’ll ever take. It ranks up there with the Flom Railway in Norway and the Amalfi coast in Italy. At every turn of the train track, you get an even better view of the Swiss Alps and the tiny communities in it. A MUST DO if you are in the Basel area.

The Big Watershed! That is what Grosse Scheidegg means!
Aug 2019
We rode bus 28 up to Grosse Scheidegg from Grindelwald along a very, very narrow paved road that was less that one lane wide. The ride took about 30 minutes and we got off the bus and found the trailhead. We were hiking to First and it was about a 8 km hike. The hike was easy with little elevation gain along the way. Panoramic views of the Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau were visible throughout most of the hike. A couple of hours did it to get to the Bahn at First. We finished our hike with a trek back to the Bachalpsee then returned to First to ride the Bahn back into Grindelwald. Great hike, trail is well surfaced and the views are really, really good.

A review of Mountain Panorama Trail Grosse Scheidegg to First
Sep 2019
TripAdvisor is not very user friendly for reviewing trails -- unless they are part of package tours. So, I post this here. One problem in Switzerland is several trails have the same or similar names. This review is of the trail from Grosse Scheidegg to First (the direction I recommend as it is more downhill) or First to Grosse Scheidegg. If starting at Grosse Scheidegg and staying in Grindelwald, take the bus to Grosse Scheidegg (included with Swiss Pass) along the watershed between the Grindelwald valleys. The bus ride offers great views as you go up a one lane road with hairpin curves, so narrow bikers have to pull over to allow buses to pass. The highlight of our ride was the bus stopping and honking as we followed a large cow up the road for about 50 ft. The trail to First (about 3.5 miles, 1.5 - 2 hours) is an easy walk along a slightly undulating footpath and is well marked and mostly paved. Take sunscreen and sun protection, especially on warm, sunny days because it is mostly through open meadows. Along the entire path there will be splendid panorama of the ice capped Bernese Alps as well as varied Alpine flora. Once at First, you can explore there and take the gondola (50% discount with Swiss Pass) back to Grindelwald.

Great spot even for non sportive people

We took the bus from Grindelwald to Grosse Scheidegg and it is very nice, you arrive to the top with no effort in 35 min, which was nice for our kids. Then you can walk around, different options depends how long you want to hike. We were there a Friday and had place to seat on bus, place in the restaurant, not much people when we walk around which was enjoyable. The view is really great.

This is where the hike to Grosse Scheidigg ends
Aug 2018 • Solo
Yes- this is the concluding point and destination of the great hike from First. The hike can take two hours. It's slightly up and down, and great views the entire way.

I love this hike, and the points when the trail crossed rushing ice cold pure mountain streams of melting snow. I do recommend it highly.

The place itself is certainly non-descript: there is a few room hotel and a cafeteria/restaurant which another tripadvisor friend accurately posted as "take-it-or-leave-it.... So I left it and had my own pre made container of a hot meal- using the boiling water that I purchased for one Buc (see photo).
