About
This jaw-dropping metal walkway is suspended from the mountainside at the top of Grindelwald First, a feat of Swiss engineering. Admire the stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys below along First Cliff Walk, which takes about 10 to 15 minutes to finish. For the best chance of clear days and far-reaching views, you can check the real-time weather online via webcam before visiting.
To get there, you'll have to take a 25-minute gondola ride from Grindelwald and then another 5-minute walk to the cliff walk. While you're there, you can also hike to Lake Bachalpsee, and then descend the mountain by zipline or mountain cart. – Tripadvisor

- edmondite1,231 contributionsLoved the Cliff WalkWe vacationed in May, and stopped by G-F to do the cliff walk on our way to Lauterbrunnen. There was a line to buy tickets for the gondola inside the building, so my DH tried the ticket machine outside the building and it worked great! We enjoyed the gondola ride and we got to the First walk about 2:00 p.m. Not much of a crowd at all. No line at the picture taking spot, just one couple ahead of us and we took each other's picture. We could see the valley floor on the first walk-through, then by the time we decided to walk through it again, the clouds had totally obscured the view! It was a great experience.Thank you for taking the time to share your fantastic experience at First - Top of Adventure! We appreciate your feedback. - Ratika KapoorKolkata (Calcutta), India55 contributionsGreat View but ExpensivePart of the Jungfrau region attraction. This is a hair raising cliff walk lasting for 10 - 15 mins. We booked our ticket in advance and it included a cable to and from ride from the Grindelwald first station to the top. There is also the option to visit the Bachalpsee lake which is another 1 hour to and fro trek for the cliff walk. It was a great experience though I found this attraction a little over priced. We took an early morning trip so it was less crowded. The photo point is extremely crowded if you have to take a pic.Thank you for taking the time to share your fantastic experience at First - Top of Adventure! - Snowball's adventureBarnet, United Kingdom6,840 contributionsThe most amazing cliff walk ever!I have to say First Cliff Walk is possibly the best attraction on the First Mountain. This 300m metal walkway is hanging along the First cliff, where at some parts you'd have to lower your head to avoid the rocks to walk past. Despite the foggy weather which made us unable to see much underneath or the mountains around us, the walk experience was amazing. The day we visited was on a quiet morning in early May, we were lucky that there weren't many tourists so we could just stroll up and down the walkway as many times as we like. (We spent about half an hour on the walkway to take pictures, which usually would only took 10-15 minutes to finish the walk.) We didn't even need to queue to the elevated viewing platform which was just truly amazing. (As I've seen some pictures of the long queue during the summer!) Despite the fact that we couldn't see anything as it was all white and fog out there we still had an incredible time! Highly Recommended!Visited May 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 31, 2023
- jenniferleeVancouver Island, Canada59 contributionsA fun adventure for the familyThis is a really fun walk with beautiful views! The price to get up in the gondola is a bit steep. The walk itself is pretty short but there are many other hiking trails around to explore. We walked most of the way down the mountain stopping for fondue at the mountain playground! Beautiful setting and delicious foodVisited August 2023Traveled with familyWritten August 6, 2023
- Gordon HGlasgow, United Kingdom39 contributionsNot as I expected, but great viewsThe cliff walk itself is free, but most people will have to pay to get up the mountain by cable car. I expected the actual cliff walk to be longer and higher than it was. There are some great views however, so it was kind of worth it for that. We went up at 9am, and got some lovely views from the cable car on the way up as well as when we were up there. If you want a pic at the very end of the cliff walk, be prepared to wait. There was a queue to get selfies with the Eiger in the background, and some people took ages with multiple selfies and group photos. I guess in the age of social media and entitled people, keeping a queue waiting ages while you take hundreds of shots of pouting and hair flicking is to be expected. Still, it was a nice trip and I am glad I did it.Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten September 13, 2023
- AKT5620 contributionsWonderful ExperienceIt was a foggy day at the top of the Jungfraujoch, so decided to take in Grindelwald and the First Walk. It was a thrilling walk and the views were spectacular. The only bad experience occurred at the end, where everyone is trying to take pictures at the extended viewing platform. A number of people were inconsiderate and spent way to much time. There should be a guide there to ensure people move along. We had to wait almost an hour to get our turn. It should only take a few minutes to take a couple of pictures and move along. It appeared a few groups spent at least 15 to 20 minutes to take pictures, Then fix their hair, did not like the pictures they took and then took some more. Very inconsiderate to the people waiting behind.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 15, 2023
- retiredhahaNew Jersey1,773 contributionsNice day tripWe walked from Hotel Caprice to the gondola station, which took approximately 12 minutes by foot. We purchased the ticket at the automated kiosk, then hopped on gondola for the 25 minute ride to the cliff. The wait time at the cliff was bearable; thirty minutes then you tried to expedite the photo session with your love ones.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 21, 2023
- Departure141055738133 contributionsUnique experienceMyself, my partner and our 18 month old had a great time on the cliff walk. It was very safe and our daughter was able to walk freely along the metal path without us feeling worried. It was also plenty big enough for us to push our stroller along too. You do have to be patient with people taking a considerable amount of time taking multiple photos so can take about 30 mins to get across. The views were breathtaking along the walk, however we skipped walking out to the very end as there was a very long and slow moving queue which didn’t seem worth it.Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten September 27, 2023
- Arthur MHamilton, Canada1,038 contributionsTrust Swiss engineering! Long lineups for a picture at the viewpoint, but all worth it!When I went to climb up Grindelwald First, there were massive lineups to get up, and especially at the end of the cliff walk, but the views from the cliffwalk were spectacular. Having a pose at the viewpoint was all worth it! As for the cliffwalk, it gets too narrow at times, but I felt safe throughout the walk. After all it's Swiss-made. And we know how punctual Swiss are, and that translates to their crafts and engineering works.Thank you for your kind feedback! We're thrilled to hear about your amazing visit of First Cliff Walk. Take the Grindelwald (town) gondola/cable car up to "First" and you'll arrive at the Cliff Walk. AWESOME views and not as scary as it looks, I promise!

Spectacular views, really enjoyed the thrilling walk! A bit of a long wait in a queue to the final viewing platform, but allows time to admire the surroundings

Hello members. Is the cliff walk worth a visit in this climate. Can u see there anything if it's raining. Also is it free then how to reach there from griendelwald . Which stop to go and is it included in swiss pass.
What kind of shies is appropriate to wear on this walk? I will be there early May. Is street platform sneakers appropriate?

I am not sure what street platform sneakers are but the walk is flat and level and you should have no problem with nearly any type of footwear.

I really don’t know how the hiking conditions are at that time of year. It depends on how rapidly the snow melts and how muddy the ground will be.
