One of the most spectacular ways to cross the Alps: the Bernina Express...

One of the most spectacular ways to cross the Alps: the Bernina Express from Chur/Davos to Tirano (via St. Moritz) links up regions with different languages and cultures. This is not a rack railway and the train winds its way gently through splendid scenery. One of the highlights is the panoramic journey through the UNESCO World Heritage RhB.

On the highest railway across the Alps, the Bernina Express climbs up to the glistening glaciers before descending to the palms of Italy far below. This rail link between Northern and Southern Europe builds bridges between regions with different languages and cultures.

Well, the route was certainly beautiful but I had a surprisingly chaotic trip. Travelling from Tirano to St. Mortiz we arrived to find there was a problem with the train - we got different explanations from everyone we asked but eventually we figured out it was that the line was down and that we should probably get on a train... The BerninaExpress is one of the best if not the best train ride I've been on. We caught it in Tirano Italy and it brought us to St Moritz. We bought the first class seats and had a lot of space to sit. Beautiful dome seating with food or drink any time we wished to order it. The ride and... More

The most beautiful part of the line is between Pontresina and Tirano. Rather than paying extra for 1st class panoramic cars on the Bernina Express, I suggest to use the frequent regional trains (many of them with opening windows which enable you to make better photos) and make some stops en route (My suggestions : Ospizio Bernina, Alp-Grüm, Le Prese).

One of the top train journeys in the world that travels in the swiss alps to Tirano in Italy, this is a fantastic experience of discovery, fantastic landscapes and amazing views. Hundreds of bridges, tunnels and viaducts that serve as the track for this trip. One has to experience it in order to understand and no one regrets it.

I booked this as part of a Thomson Discovery package from the uk. I'd got into my head that we were doing a rail journey - say rail from Como up to the Bernina Express and then into St Moritz. In actual fact, we were picked up in Menaggio at 8:30am returning at 7:30pm. I worked out that we spent... More

I did both Glacier Express and the Bernina Line (local trains) and found the Bernina to be more breathtaking. There is more variety of the landscape, from glaciers, turquoise lakes, waterfalls, rivers, viaducts, tunnels, pine forest, castles, alpine villages, Italian streets, etc. You don't get this much with the Glacier Express (and the ride is shorter). I found the entire... More

We took the train from Davos to Tirano! Boy! What a amazing train journey, words can't do justice to to the scenery, amazing engenering and the hospitality! If you going from Davos sitting on the right hand side gives you slightly better view but as it is a panaromice train views are awesome from where ever you look at from!... More

We debated on paying for the Bernina Express vs regular train. I'm glad we got the Bernina Express with the super high Windows overhead. Otherwise, we wouldn't have seen the peaks of mountains well. Getting pics through windows is hard, especially when it rained. There is one-two open windows between cars to walk to and get pics. There really isn't... More
