About Bernina Express
The most spectacular way to cross the Alps: the Bernina Express from Chur / Landquart / Davos / St. Moritz - Valposchiavo - Tirano links up regions with different languages and cultures. This is not a rack railway and the train winds its way gently through splendid scenery. On the highest railway across the Alps, the Bernina Express climbs up to the glistening glaciers before descending to the palms of Italy far below. This rail link between Northern and Southern Europe builds bridges between regions with different languages and cultures. New: Starting on 11 May 2019, the Bernina Express will run from Landquart into Valposchiavo and on into the Italian town of Tirano. The route to/from Landquart through the Prättigau and the wild Zügen Gorge between Davos and Filisur prolongs the pleasure by just under 45 kilometres.

One of Switzerland's great travel experiences is a ride in one of the red carriages of the Bernina Express, which connects the Engadin with the Valtellina in Italy. There is definitely no need for any reading material on this trip, since the view out the window is definitely too attractive. The ride starts at St.Moritz and then goes through the Bernina Valley past Pontresina and the glaciers of Morteratsch and Diavolezza up to the Bernina Pass, where the Ospizio Bernina station lies at 2253m asl. Nowhere does a train cross the Alps at such an altitude, since the other famous rail lines go through tunnels (Gotthard, Lötschberg). The climb and descent here is done without racks, only thanks to some brillant engineering - as can be seen for example at the circular viaduct of Brusio further south. From the Ospizio Bernina station the train follows the Lago Bianco, a reservoir, and then goes down with many bends and views of Palü glacier past Alp Grüm and Cavaglia (with the Glacier Garden) to Poschiavo, the attractive little town, followed by the Lago di Poschiavo and Brusio to Tirano in the Valtellina. The Bernina line is part of the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) network and together with the connecting Albula line (from St.Moritz to Thusis) it has been declared in 2008 a part of the UNESCO World Heritage, thus the third railway system thus honoured - after Austria's Semmering and the Mountain Railways of India (Shimla, Darjeeling, Nilgiri).

Absolutely astonishing. Get a first class ticket and hope there’s no one sitting on the other side of the aisle. You’ll be constantly bouncing from one side to the other trying to take in the most amazing views on this spectacular piece of engineering. Given the chance, would happily have done it over again and well worth every single euro.
