A great old city, only walk road. Plenty of restaurants or shops.
Different monument to visit, the castle, the iwc museum.
The quai along the Rhein are great with such place to pic-nic or take the sun.

Visit the old town of Schaffhausen and you will be overwhelmed of the richness of that nice place. More than 600 years of history welcome you with charm. Enjoy a walk and see many credentials of heritage architecture. From the fortress "Munot" you have a fantastic view over the roofs of the old town.

Visited the place for a couple of hours while we were on our way to the Rhine Falls. Lovely place with beautiful charming houses and shops.

This town is a perfect shopping town as you are out but no cars allowed in the city. The old houses are with beautiful paintings and well known for their Erker (covered balcony like windows).
Wonderful nice city with open-minded people.
Come to Schaffhuuse for a short trip to the Rheinfall.

Wonderfully preserved, new shops behind prettily preserved facades. This is the kind of 17th century town architecture you'd expect to see imitated by Disney when making beauty and the Beast or Cinderella.

The old town is ok but somehow misses the vibe and atmosphere to make it special. Sure, it has some nice old Renaissance houses with murals. But there's modern stuff as well.
Would I go here just to see this town? No. Stein am Rhein is just a bit further and actually much nicer to see. If it weren't for the nearby Rhine falls this city would not see many tourists.

For an American, a very old city center is fascinating, but this is just one of many and not worth a special visit. It has some restaurants, not many open on Sunday, and few hotels.

We combined our visit to Rhinefalls with a visit to this town and had lunch there since it was one station away from Rhinefalls. When we bought our ticket from Lucerne station, we told the SSB manned counter that we wanted to visit Rhinefalls and Schaffhausen. So, we were sold a ticket for the day that covers the zone for these 2 places. The town is really pretty with traditional buildings and a large square and plenty of restaurants. Just take a walk and enjoy a meal there. The locals are friendly. The town is easy to navigate and you don’t need a map. You will know how to get back to the train station easily.
