If you don't go to the Drei Weieren while visiting St.Gallen, you missed out on the most beautiful spot of the city! It is so quiet and relaxing up there, and it is beautiful in each season of the year. I highly recommend it!
You should walk up here if it's a clear day, won't regret it. In summertime you can picknick by one of the lakes, play soccer, go for a swimm or just watch the locals doing their stuff.

Yes it is within walking distance from the youth hostel St. Gallen. Actually it will take you about 10 Minutes to walk up. The guys at the hostel can explain the way to you. You can enjoy the walk around the little lakes. With the weather nice as it is now you can go for a little swim. The water will be a little cold but you can relax and get some sun. You can just enjoy the view over the town. Or you'll eat something in the restaurant beside the family lake. If you would like to discover the old St. Gallen you walk up from the youth hostel along the lakes and down on the other side. Where you'll reach the station of the Mühleggbahn a little funicular railway. Once there you can enjoy a coffee and a piece of cake at Rippuner cafe. Then you can walk down to the town or you enjoy a little walk down through the small valley (10 to 20 Minutes). You will end up just on the back of the St. Gallen Cathedral and Library which is a UNESCO cultural heritage monumental. I hope this was of any help. Wish you a lot of fun exploring my hometown.
