About
The cathedral represents one of the last monumental Baroque monastic constructions in Europe. It was built from 1755 to 1767 under the direction of Vorarlberg native and master builder Johann Michael Beer. The choir stalls with 84 lovely carved seats and the historic organ are works of art in and of themselves. Every Tuesday, there is a Evening Prayer (Domvesper)at 5.30 P.M. The inside of the church is painted in vibrant colours and adorned with stucco, and the interior is decorated with numerous carvings. A serene atmosphere prevails in the church thanks to the soft lighting and malachite green stucco. After the secularisation of the Convent in 1805, the church became a parish church and 1847 at the same time cathedral of the new founded diocese. In 2013, the altar area was renewed. Especially impressive is the baptism fountain with the respecting of the frescos of the cupola. Beside the different liturgy Services and concerts there are also guided tours, for example from may to September every Saturday at 10.30 A.M. (Free admission, collect).

The St Gallen Cathedral was a surprise. It was very large and majestic. The art very detailed with some 3D effects built into the paintings, if you look close. I did not expect such a splendid Cathedral in St Gallen. However, it rivals most of the grand cathedrals in Europe.

The cathedral is located centrally and imposing in sight. The inside is well preserved and decorated unlike other Swiss churches due to the reformist activity. The statues, frescos and ceiling paintings are a sight to behold. The altar is huge and greatly decorated and adorned. A very good place to pray, contemplate and relax.

After an appointment we were given a tour through the former abbey, the stunning church and its two crypts, the library.. Sadly I didn’t have much time, nevertheless it was amazing to dive into the history and beauty of this place. I’ll certainly come back.

All of my St. Gallen reviews have the caveat that St. Gallen is nice, but not worth a separate trip. If it's on your way somewhere else it's a decent stop with a few things to see. This cathedral is spectacular, & the surrounding area nice to walk around in & explore. It was nice at night too.

This cathedral was actually prettier than many others we saw in other swiss cities. Gorgeous painted ceiling, spacious church overall. Nice to see that a church team also gathered offerings for Palestine.

The church is free to enter. It is a Roman Catholic Church in the baroque style and opened in 1772. It is part of the Abby of St. Gallen and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Walked in the St Gallen Cathedral. It was not that huge as in the other churches but the interiors were awesome. Not much people when we visited. I kinda liked the serenity and peace inside. One must drop by this church when in St Gallen.

If you find yourself in St Gallen make a point of visiting this very ancient & since 1983, UNESCO world heritage site. The Monastry here was founded by St Gall, one of the "disciples" of St Columba of Iona fame in the 8th century.

The church is very ornate & stunningly beautiful in the Baroque style. The High Alter is particularly impressive as are the 3 full organs - how I wish I could have heard those being played.

The ceiling is adorned with stunning frescoes.

The whole area surrounding the church is part of the old monastic settlement & there is an air of calm & beauty about it all.

Entry to the church is free

The area is surrounded by many lovely restaurants & coffee shops & it would be perfectly possible to spend a whole day exploring this ancient & quaint corner of our world.

Regular R/C Masses held on weekends - full timetable available in church portico.
