Impressed

The Abbey Library did not disappoint. I took the audio tour and spent hours in the library and surrounding area. Staff were friendly and helpful.

The town is very charming - and the church and library is ornate and beautiful. The library is smaller than I expected but wood curving and amount of antique books stored there is impressive. We spent a day walking around the old historical town surrounding the church and enjoyed it. The town is kind of out of way and I... More

Incredible old monk library. Ancient & interesting manuscripts. Even the air feels historic. FYI- you are not permitted to bring cameras inside & while they have tons of postcards, they do not have any postcard books They do some sort of tours, but we did not see how to connect with them & were in a hurry so we didn't... Mildly disappointed. The place looks as amazing as you think it might, but it's tiny, you can only access a small portion of it, it's generally full of tourists (including me) which makes it difficult to enjoy; there is zero photography, regardless of flash and very little information about the tomes of books available and certainly no ability to access... The library was very nice. Not much in the way of English signs or explanations but one can do ones own research beforehand. Also no photos allowed, they actually make you lock your camera in a locker. Makes no sense as long as no flashes are allowed. Seems like a ruse to make you buy their pictures and postcards. Still... The Abbey Library merits a detour for a visit if you are within an hour's drive. The building, the book collection, and the special exhibits are outstanding! I knew about some of the rare books, but never imagined I would get to see actual specimens. I was speechless when thinking about the books' age. Absolutely wonderful they have been preserved... I visited twice. Once in September 2014, and again in May 2015. This library is beautiful. It's typically not very crowded, unless a school group is visiting, but it's almost certainly the biggest tourist destination in St. Gallen. The woodwork, bookshelves, ceiling, and floor are all in wonderful shape (you do have to wear slippers while inside. You can easily... More

Always very impressive! Not only the room, but also the history around it. Take a guide (person or electronic device) to capture this unique sightseeing.

Mainly books of course, but one of a kind. Handpainted by monks. But also the ambience and architecture of that room is worth a visit. You should give yourself this 30 minutes to experience the very old ways of reading and writing. You are to find some real treasures. You should be 7 years or older for that one.

Somewhere I saw the picture of this age old library and I was dying to see it and chances came so soon. After disembarking at St . Gallen I headed for this Abbey Library behind the Cathedral. It's quite near to the St. Gallen station( Bahnhoff). This library is a single roomed library the door of which is richly ornate.... More
