The Abbey Library St. Gallen, famous for its beautiful baroque hall, is one of the oldest libraries in the world. And it holds one of the most important manuscript collections in Europe, especially for the Carolingian and Ottonian period from the 8th to the 11th century. The collection is presented to the visitors in changing and thematised expositions. The library forms the central part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Convent of St. Gallen.

A search on the internet will give you all the historical details however when we visited we were most impressed by the documents on display. the hand lettered bibles and other documents were mind blowing to think that they had survived, in some case, more than 1200 years. Other documents were interesting such as the Rules of ST Benedict and... More

Been here once before and it is nice to see they change the exhibition. However it would be nice to have some general information on display as it is only when you have the knowledge from previous visits that you can really start piecing together the extraordinary history of its contents.

The convent of St.Gallen produced the eldest examples of high Germanistic Culture in the years of 750 to 1000 in the world. Breath-taking!

The heavy ornamentation of the baroque style is quite evident in this library. Perhaps on the scale of libraries it is not very big, but the openness of the space give you the feeling of being in a cathedral. Even long after I have been to Switzerland and St. Gallen, I still recall this beautiful place.

The library is truly beautiful. We enjoy the visit very much, we found the audio guide useful and explanations were good and not too long.

It was expensive to get in (CHF 12 per person) particularly when you realise that it is to see just one room. But, what a room! We had to wear huge over-slippers and when you walk into the library it is a shock because it is old and beautiful. The collection is riveting and awe-inspiring. I'd say that this was... More

Best way to explore the city is to rent an audio system from the tourist office and end the tour by visiting the library. I did not see any guides, but enough literature to enlighten us on the significance of the incredible collection of books.

When you first enter the Abbey library, it feels like you've come to a place from fairy tales. This is how you've imagined some fantasy library would look like when reading your childhood books! Beautifully decorated hall, antique books and incunabula, huge colorful globe and the whole magic atmosphere captivate you. The hall is quite small so you probably don't... More

We visited the library in Jul 2016 and were mesmerized by its beauty and history. It's small and powerful place and just incredible to see show much history there and so well preserved! Cannot be missed!

Best to have a private tour with an english speaking guide to understand just how amazing this library is. English tours must be booked in advance and are pricey but, in my opinion, worth every penny!
