The Abbey Library St. Gallen, famous for its beautiful baroque hall, is one of the oldest libraries in the world. And it holds one of the most important manuscript collections in Europe, especially for the Carolingian and Ottonian period from the 8th to the 11th century. The collection is presented to the visitors in changing and thematised expositions. The library forms the central part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Convent of St. Gallen.

The library consists in one room, but stunningly beautiful. The audio guide is nice to have. Getting a tour guide is the same as reading the inscriptions next to the objects, so you might spare the cost.

From our first step into this library my partner and I were mesmerized. The photos show the beauty of this library, but cannot prepare you for the sense of ‘wow’ you feel upon your first step inside. Be sure to also go to the church,...More

Honestly both H and I found St Gall to be rather boring. The saving grace is this beautiful abbey library. Absolutely wow once you stepped into it. The smell, the lighting, the woody floor/ shelves/ railings etc. No photography allowed. We got the audio guide...More

This is a site not to be missed! When my husband first suggested seeing a library, I wasn't so convinced (especially with a one and a half year old in tow). But I'm so glad we went! It was the highlight of Sankt Gallen for...More

You need to visit this library if you travel in the region. The room is awesome and the books on display are spectacular.

The library is beautifully filled with ancient manuscripts that remind you of the importance of the monasteries throughout Western History. The setting was opulent. They have seasonal or rotating exhibits.

I have never been in a library like this. The books in the display cases were from the 800's, it seemed like the displays rotate. This one was about Irish influence. The walls are lined with so many old, old books. The ceiling is gorgeous....More

Extraordinary medieval and classic library. The setting is gorgeous and the exhibits always display rare manuscripts (from one of the most important incunable collections in the World). It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, do not miss it! Well worth traveling to St. fallen.
