About
The Kunstmuseum St. Gallen, with its attractive, temporary exhibitions of contemporary and modern art, enjoys international renown. As a treasure chest of eastern Switzerland, the museum houses an abundant collection of paintings and sculptures from the Late Middle Ages through to the present, the highlights of which are shown in a permanent exhibition. The building, constructed in 1877 by Johann Christoph Kunkler in a neoclassical style, invites one to stroll through the art of the past and present: a dialogue of old and new enables a diversified cultural experience, whereby international traveling exhibitions can be seen, and masterpieces of the past meet today’s contemporary art! An extensive educational programming team has made the Kunstmuseum St. Gallen an attractive place for encountering art of the past and present! The Kunstzone (art zone) in the Lokremise (engine depot), the Kunstmuseum’s second «venue», serves as a culture lab for contemporary art.

A wide range of art works with many religious works and prints but also some very interesting post/impressionist works. The modern art works were however limited and to my mind disappointing. The exhibits are well set out and organised chronologically with an emphasis on Swiss artists. There is a cafe but it is offers very limited fare.

Dear Nick B,
thank you for your review and constructive comments. As we show a special exhibition on a donation at the moment, there are not so many modern artworks on view as usual, you're right. This changes from exhibition to exhibition. Our café offers a wide range of drinks.
Kind regards, Sophie from Kunstmuseum St.Gallen

It was great to see the intriguing works by Grace Schwindt titled Defiant Bodies. Fluid flowing shapes featuring animals are engaging. Reflecting change and fragility in life, it is thought provoking and instructive.
The great Max Liebermann features in the strong permanent collection, with works such as Artists’ Studio and Two Women Busily Sowing.
Ferdinand Gehr’s Mother and Adam and Eve in Paradise by Hans Bruhlmann are amongst many fine pieces.
