This tour is a bit different from any I have taken before. Ralf is clearly very passionate about what he does and takes a lot of joy in it. We did the tour in English, and he does a very good job. The route is I think about a mile and a half spanning both sides of the river and he tells you about what medieval Luzern was like.

He uses a lot of different media during his tour. He passes out postcards, shows pictures on his ipad, and sets up a tripod and projector to display images on the side of a building in a couple of spots. That last part is a bit awkward but it made it fun. He seems to really enjoy doing it that way so why not.

If you want something fun and a little different and want to tour the city at night, I would recommend this tour.

My wife and I were surprised to find that we were the only two on our tour the evening we had booked. However, Ralph our guide delivered the tour with as much gusto and passion as I imagine he delivers all of his tours. He was very knowledgeable and answered every question we asked, even on nondescript buildings that we noticed during the daytime and weren’t specifically part of the tour. You could tell that Ralph loved being in Lucerne and knew it’s history in depth. I especially enjoyed the projector views with explanations that complemented the buildings we were looking at.

This was a great experience and a good way to get to know a beautiful part of Switzerland, along with a look into its medieval past.

Highly recommend this tour!

We have been on a few of these types of tours over the years and inevitably end of a disappointed in the end. Not this time! We really enjoyed this tour and our tour guide Ralph was fantastic. So much interesting history and facts about the city. We had walked past many of the sights during the day with no idea of the history and stories associated with the buildings and area. Highly recommend this tour for a great evening!

Just completed a 90-minute evening tour in Lucerne led by Ralph. He was on time, ready and dressed for the occasion. I guess being mid-May and before the tourist season, we were the only customers so it was a private tour. Unlike the free tours we have done, this tour was filled with real information and Ralph had drawings to illustrate the long, violent medieval past of the city. My favorite stop was the pharmacy. An amazingly beautiful building as well as an interesting window display showing the way it would have been in the 1,200's. I recommend this tour for a good look into the past of the city.

My wife and I took this tour and from meeting the guide to the end of the experience, it was packed with information, cool facts, maps, and pictures.
Ralf knows this city and could answer any questions, just so engaging.
It was definitely a (if not the) highlight of our visit to Lucerne.
If this tour is offered during a visit, don't miss it!

Lucerne has an amazing history and it is so much fun to learn more about it by participating in this tour. Ralf was wonderful in making the city's history come alive. It was fascinating to hear about how this city has evolved over hundreds of years while strolling around in the evening light.

This was going to be a very long day as we had left Montreux on the Golden Pass Line early in the morning but this was the only night Ralf did the tour in English. So – there we were at 9.30 pm in Rosengartenplatz near the end of the Kapelbrucke. Ralf was in full costume with a lantern and a bunch of wicked looking halberds – a combination spear and battle axe. Ralf’s tour and stories were fascinating and the mediaeval old town was very pretty by night. At intervals Ralf would get out his projector to show us paintings from mediaeval times (often gruesome). The gold standard for Nightwatchman tours is the one in Rothenburg but this one runs it a close second.

There were two couples plus Ralf. In addition to a real halberd, Ralf had a projector to show images of artwork depicting medieval Lucerne. He was very well informed and fluent in English. There were several items that he pointed out which a normal tourist would not have noticed, so the tour was good value for the money. On the web page, it will say "busy" for all the days that this tour is available. Just click to send Ralf an e-mail and it's easy to set up the date.

The tour and our guide were excellent. He showed so much passion for Lucerne and for the mid-evil history of Lucerne it was amazing. Had several locals stop and tell us that he was the best town story teller and there were none better! We would agree!
