Mt. Rigi
About
Known as the ‘Queen of the Mountains’, Mt. Rigi is an easy day trip from Lucerne. Here, you can enjoy sweeping views of the Swiss Alps, visit a cheese farm, go hiking, visit the Kanzeli viewpoint, and even go skiing or sledding in the winter. Getting to the mountain is part of the fun, with the journey—that’s entirely free with a Swiss Travel Pass— involving a boat ride and a cog railway jaunt. Otherwise, have a hassle-free experience with a tour, with optional entrance to the Rigi Kaltbad Mineral Baths, a cruise along Lake Lucerne, or an additional visit to Mt. Pilatus. – Tripadvisor

    Way better than Mt Pilatus
Went to Mt Rigi, thought its just a so so, second to Mt Pilatus. Boy, I was wrong. With Swiss Travel Pass, I get a free ferry boat ride of Lake Lucern, excellent view. We then rode Cogwheel train up to Rigi Kulm. The view at the top was excellent. Make sure you hike down from the top to Rigi kalbad. The view of Lake Lucern and the valley is incredible.
Hello yenforceman, wow, thank you for this very kind review. Did you know Mount Rigi is called the Queen of the Mountains? It is just because of its breath-taking views and numerous possibilities to hike, take pictures, enjoy while relaxing may have lunch or a snack on your way. Besides, the Swiss Travel Pass covers the cogwheel train from Arth-Goldau, too, why not come back and discover the North Side of the mountain? Sunny regards, Ragna, Customer Service

    Amazing trip
Well, we opted for Mount Rigi mostly because it was fully covered in our Swiss Travel Pass and seemed like a very good excursion to give us a chance to ride various transportation options. And I was pleased to see our choice turning out perfect. Our itinerary - train from Zurich to Arth Goldau, followed by cogwheel train to Rigi Kulm and while coming down, we walked from Rigi Kulm to Rigi Staffel, took train from Rigi Staffel to Kaltbad First and then a cable car from Kaltbad to Weggis. It was a wonderful time spent on the top with amazing views of the lakes below, Lucerne city in the far and paragliding happening around us. One of the best part of our transportation was the cable car ride from Kaltbad to Weggis. It was a thrilling drop in terms of height something worth enjoying.
Dear AkshayaS1978, the multiple options of mountain railracks and hiking trails, the numerous combinations of roundtrips on Mount Rigi and the possibility to include boat and train ride, all covered by the Swiss Travel Pass, is certainly a big plus wcomparerd to other mountain railroads. Did you know that Mount Rigi is called the Queen of the Mountains? It is thanks to its stunning 360 degree view at the summit. You can spot more than 6000 peaks and 13 lakes. Thank you for your great review, sending you sunny regards, Ragna, Customer Service

    Do not skip Mount Rigi!
Do not skip Mount Rigi if you go to Switzerland!. It is one of the only things that would make me go back to Switzerland. It is beautiful and worth the experience. The view and it is seamless their system of getting up there. We booked a tour and we almost didn't go because I don't like to go on boat rides. But it was a yacht, a little crowded but it was great. I can say this was top 3 out of all the places we have been, with easily being number one.
Dear athenatp, as we can read you had unforgetable day with very many stunning memories. We are very happy when Mount Rigi can inspire our guests so much. Did you know that Mount Rigi is called the queen of mountains? There is a reason for it since it offers so much and if you combine the trip as you did with the different means of transportation, you can get the most out of the trip. Once more thank you for this great review and hopefully we see you again next time in Switzerland. Ragna, Customer Service

    Great views!
The cog railway to the top was great and the views wonderful. The walks at the top have fantastic views - 360 degrees - 9 lakes - makes you realise the Mount is almost an island. You can see for miles. Good cafe at the top too. great wooden sunbeams you can sit on to either admire the views of eat a picnic. Taking a different cog train down takes you to Lake Lucerne. great trip for all ages and fitness levels.
Hello theresalwaysone, that sounds just great. Did you know, you can also see more than 620 peaks and 24 out of 26 cantons of Switzerland? Thank you for this wonderful review and sharing your impressions with us. Hope to see you soon again, sunny regards, Ragna, Customer Service

    Amazing mountain scenery
This is another of those amazing mountain scenery trips, especially on a clear sunny day. Give yourself half a day to get here and spend some time at the top. Depending on where you are based, Mount Rigi can be reached by various means. It's close to Lucerne and can also be reached with a train and bus ride from Zurich main station - get to Vitznau station and then take the cogwheel car up to Rigi. All covered by the Swiss Travel Pass if you have that. You can wander around at the top for a while and take in the views. There are plenty of benches if you want to do a lunch stop here. Suggestion for the trip back down, if you have time, is return on the other cogwheel line which goes to Arth-Goldau. From there, make your way to Schwyz (by train) and then a bus to Stoos. Mount Stoos is then reached by the steepest funicular railway in the world. Two great mountains in a day!
Dear mahatinu, thank you for this detailed explanation and great review. With its different means of transport on both sides of the mountain, the stunning views from various spots and so many hiking options we are sure Mount Rigi is worth its nickname Queen of the Mountains. Winterly regards, Ragna, Customer Service

Trip From Zürich: Guided Day Trip to Rigi and Lake Lucerne Company name: Best of Switzerland Tours AG Tour lovely guide: Christina. Beauty at its best
Journey to Mount Rigi in the cog wheel train from Vitznau was a great experience. Climbing very steeply, exposing the breathtaking vistas through gaps in tree canopies and some alpine cottages was a marvellous experience. On the way we had the choice of getting off at any station and trekking to the next and rejoining another train paving the opportunity to take pictures from different levels of the route. Further up we went, prettier was the horizon we saw. From the Rigi Kulm station the tracks led to the summit with more lookout points giving a magnificent view of the whole region. The lookout tower which I believe was a Swisscom communication antenna site nevertheless provided a sky-high view of the summit and beyond and the lake Lucerne below was miniscule by the sheer area one could see to the naked eye.
Hi 307kamalp, wow, thank you for this stunning description of your impressions. It describes the experience on the Queen of the Mountains better than we can put into words. The absolutely unique 360-degree view of Rigi Kulm is something you have to see for yourself to appreciate its breathtaking beauty. Did you know that with good visibility you can see 13 lakes, 24 of 26 cantons, 620 Alpine peaks and as far as Germany and France? Best regards, Ragna, Customer Service

    Impressive view
Mont Rigi is a very famous spot of tourism in Switzerland. When you get there, you directly get to understand why. You drive up with a nice and comfortable train. Already during g the drive you get an amazing view over the lake. From the top, you have a 360° panorama, which is lovely. If you feel like it, you can walk down on foot (the end is very, very steep, though). Otherwise, you can take the train back. It's definitely a place to spend at least half a day.
Hello YannR2828, you are right, Mount Rigi definitively deserves the name "Queen of the Mountains", as you have an unique and absolutely astonishing 360 ° panorama at the top. But also its innumerable possibilities, wether on foot or by train, also make a trip to Mount Rigi something special. See you soon, Ragna, Customer Service

Mt. Rigi offers great views from the summit.

Our trip included the lake boat from Lucerne to Vitznau and then via the Rigi Bahn train to the top. The train station is only a few steps from the boat dock. The only down-side was that our train was extremely crowded and many people were left standing for the entire trip.

Hi FF13, it seems you picked a popular day to come to Rigi. We always try to use additional rolling stock when the rush is big. However, it is not always possible to estimate the number of visitors. We are happy about the great rating and that you were able to enjoy the day on the Rigi and the boat trip. Kind regards, Ragna, Customer Service

We got to Mt. Rigi via boat on Lake Lucerne and then cogwheel train, and both were great at being able to see the area. When we were there it was a foggy/cloudy day in Lucerne. We rose above the clouds, and our view was the magnificent mountaintops rising from the mist. We couldn't see the lake, but we didn't care, it was still beautiful.

Hi donnadC9861QH, the weather makes the difference (or what you make out of it). We took the cog wheel train up to the top. Purchased tickets on the train on the day - ticket conductor was very helpful. Mt Rigi was covered in snow and gave our teens a bit of a winter snow experience - we had lots of fun at the top walking and admiring the views, trying not to slip and even throwing a few snowballs. Worth the trip to the top for the views alone! There was a little cafe and souvenir shop at the top.

I went to visit thuis day when it was cloudy and raining. But I'm so glad we did! Up with the blue train and dawn with the red train. Marvelous views and a great experience. We loved it! the special is the turn-a-round of the train at the station of Vitznau. And this town is also a fairytale city you must visit.

Hello Sasinerga, we are glad you had the chance to visit Mount Rigi during your stay. It is indeed impressive to watch the turn-around in Vitznau. Did you know that this system exist already for decades? Ever since the cogwheel train has been invented in Vitznau this kind of shunting has been in use. And Mount Rigi had the first cogwheel train in Europe, starting in the year 1871. Hope to see you again, majestic greetings from Vitznau, Ragna, Customer Service

Here’s the thing. You can take the Rigi Bahn up to the top to soak in all the incredible views that a mountain like Rigi has to offer. BUT, if you decide you are willing to take on the hike instead, this mountain experience is taken to the next level. Yes, the views at the top are beautiful, but it is expensive to take the train up there and the views are nothing compared to the ones you get on the way up.

Yes, the hike is not easy but we took our time and it was an incredible experience. The hike took us about 4 hours to get up and then we paid a much cheaper price to take the train down which felt very rewarding.

Hello Grand D, wow, we take our hats off, that's a great achievement to hike up the mountain. It is indeed a completely different experience to hike up to the top and enjoy all the different views. We were staying in Brunnen and drove over to vitznau. Parking was adjacent to the train. It was partly cloudy. We had some sun on the way up. The scenery was still spectacular. The train made several stops on the way up to let passengers off at hotels. We saw some cows that had made their way off the mountain on a special car. It was cloudy on top. We still enjoyed the ride.

This is the top of the mountain with views all round. Can see three lakes.

We came by train from Vitznau. The cable cars were new and modern with display inside, and the coaches were white instead of usual Red.

We took the train from Arth-G up the mountain and enjoyed all the views with some wonderful pictures on the way up. We took pictures then from all around the train station and enjoyed the sites. It was cloudy at parts but mostly great views in the morning. We walked from Rigi Kulm to Kaltbad with a stop to eat on the way. An easy to do hike even with a small child.

Dear themanofec, it sounds that you made the best out of your stay. Mount Rigi offers so many activities, by foot, by cogwheel train or just enjoying the views at the top. Did you know that we have more than 120 km hiking trails in summer to discover hidden spots and stunning views? And wherever you go you will find the chance to have a rest, in a restaurant, at an alpine farmer or just by yourself on a silent bench. We hope to see you again soon, greetings from Vitznau, Ragna, Customer Service

Rigi is much easier to get to than Pilatus and has good facilities at the base of the cable car as well as the top. We took the ferry across to town and then walked the short way to the cable car and took that up. Tremendous views and a quick journey. We spent several hours just walking up at the top and then decided to walk down the mountain that parallels the railway. This is nice because if you get tired, you can just jump on the train and take it down to the bottom. Overall, a more family friendly day out than some of the other mountains and the views towards Zug are pretty impressive.

Dear SaltyCrisp1968 Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us. Mount Rigi offers indeed so many possibilities to discover the mountain! Not only the different types or mountain railways offer stunning views and rides, but also the 120 km hiking trails in summer and 35 km in winter. At the moment there is enough snow for skiing and sledging as well, we have snow shoe trails and many restaurants offering take-away with warm drinks and food. Sure, the summit Rigi Kulm is not as high as other mountains, but the 360 degree view of 24 cantons, 13 lakes and maaaany other peaks is just unique and hard to top. See you soon again, snowy regards, Ragna, Customer Service
