Mount Rigi's majestic peninsula on Lake Lucerne is the perfect setting for an authentic Swiss mountain experience with unforgettable views of over 13 lakes and the spectacular snow-capped Swiss Alps. Located in the heart of Switzerland, Mt. Rigi can be quickly and easily reached from Lucerne and Zurich. It is the Swiss people's favourite mountain destination, can be accessed via Europe's first ever cogwheel train (est. 1871) and is renowned for its numerous cogwheel railway and aerial cable car routes. You can visit Mt. Rigi 365 days a year and there's plenty of outdoor action on offer, including 120km of hiking trails. Fantastic experience, stunning views. We organised the trip ourselves, just bought tickets from boat Dock with train to top included.Boat trip was amazing, just as your a few minutes out of Dock you get the most breathtaking views of the alps.
After about 1 hour its off boat right outside train station for ride to the top of the mountain.we had a picnic on top as lots of places to sit and walk, there was a market in Lucerne on the Tuesday so we bought all our stuff there for picnic. My wife and I then walked down past a couple of stations, stopping on way down at one of the numerous, cafe and huts serving good drinks, food and souvenirs. We went from Lucerne by boat to vitznau then on train to top it cost about 60 swiss francs for us both.
There are numerous ways up and down but some things were not open so that was our best option. Please go as you won't be disappointed.

Mt. Rigi offers great views from the summit.

Our trip included the lake boat from Lucerne to Vitznau and then via the Rigi Bahn train to the top. The train station is only a few steps from the boat dock. The only down-side was that our train was extremely crowded and many people were left standing for the entire trip.

Hi FF13, it seems you picked a popular day to come to Rigi. We always try to use additional rolling stock when the rush is big. However, it is not always possible to estimate the number of visitors. We are happy about the great rating and that you were able to enjoy the day on the Rigi and the boat trip. Kind regards, Ragna, Customer Service

Here’s the thing. You can take the Rigi Bahn up to the top to soak in all the incredible views that a mountain like Rigi has to offer. BUT, if you decide you are willing to take on the hike instead, this mountain experience is taken to the next level. Yes, the views at the top are beautiful, but it is expensive to take the train up there and the views are nothing compared to the ones you get on the way up.

Yes, the hike is not easy but we took our time and it was an incredible experience. The hike took us about 4 hours to get up and then we paid a much cheaper price to take the train down which felt very rewarding.

Hello Grand D, wow, we take our hats off, that's a great achievement to hike up the mountain. It is indeed a completely different experience to hike up to the top and enjoy all the different views. But you will need to come back, there are still some more trails to discover from other sides... hope to welcome you soon again, all the best, Ragna, Customer Service

This is the top of the mountain with views all round. Can see three lakes.

We came by train from Vitznau. The cable cars were new and modern with display inside, and the coaches were white instead of usual Red.

Hello mantravel14, in fact, you can see 13 lakes if the weather conditions are right. But also with less perfect conditions the view is fantastic and the ride uphill an experience worth the while. Thank you for this great review, kind regards from Switzerland, Ragna, Customer Service

We were staying in Brunnen and drove over to vitznau. Parking was adjacent to the train. It was partly cloudy. We had some sun on the way up. The scenery was still spectacular. The train made several stops on the way up to let passengers off at hotels. We saw some cows that had made their way off the mountain on a special car. It was cloudy on top. We still enjoyed the ride.

Avoid the crowds, try Mt Rigi. Two substantial rack railways serve Mt Rigi, the Arth Rigi Bahn and the Vitznau Rigi Bahn. The Arth Rigi Bahn runs from the SBB Arth Goldau station, while the Vitznau Rigi Bahn operates from Viznau, a small town on the Lake of Luzern, a 30+ boat ride from Luzern. Alternatively, you can hike up and/or down. The restaurant at the top is fair, maybe a bit expensive for what you get, but generally ok.

Hey Electroburger, thank you so much for having taken your time to send us your feedback. We are happy to read that you had the chance to escape the crowds. It is our aim to make our guests feel comfortable and welcome, to enjoy the views and the silence. By using both cogwheel trains from every side you get the chance to experience a stunning round trip including both sides of our Queen of the Mountains, as Rigi is also called. Hope so see you soon, stay well, kind regards, Ragna, Customer Service

This is the subject of one of JMW Turner's water colour masterpieces and the peak is just as breathtaking in 'rel life'. The cog railway can get crowded so be prepared for a long wait. There are stopping points on the way to the summit. Great walks at eh top, if teh weather is OK

Hello Jackie H Thank you for your positive review. We are happy to read that Mount Rigi convinced you in real life. Mount Rigi is also called the Queen of the Mountains and there is a reason for it... breathtaking views, overwhelming landscapes, its authentity... pure Swissness. And if some days the weahter is not as convincing as it could be, at least the rides on the cogwheel trains and cable cars are worth the journey. Did you know that Mount Rigi had the first cogwheel train in Europe? Hope to see you soon again, sunny greetings, Ragna, Customer Service

I went to visit thuis day when it was cloudy and raining. But I'm so glad we did! Up with the blue train and dawn with the red train. Marvelous views and a great experience. We loved it! the special is the turn-a-round of the train at the station of Vitznau. And this town is also a fairytale city you must visit.

Hello Sasinerga, we are glad you had the chance to visit Mount Rigi during your stay. It is indeed impressive to watch the turn-around in Vitznau. Did you know that this system exist already for decades? Ever since the cogwheel train has been invented in Vitznau this kind of shunting has been in use. And Mount Rigi had the first cogwheel train in Europe, starting in the year 1871. Hope to see you again, majestic greetings from Vitznau, Ragna, Customer Service

Rigi is much easier to get to than Pilatus and has good facilities at the base of the cable car as well as the top. We took the ferry across to town and then walked the short way to the cable car and took that up. Tremendous views and a quick journey. We spent several hours just walking up at the top and then decided to walk down the mountain that parallels the railway. This is nice because if you get tired, you can just jump on the train and take it down to the bottom. Overall, a more family friendly day out than some of the other mountains and the views towards Zug are pretty impressive.

Dear SaltyCrisp1968 Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us. Mount Rigi offers indeed so many possibilities to discover the mountain! Not only the different types or mountain railways offer stunning views and rides, but also the 120 km hiking trails in summer and 35 km in winter. At the moment there is enough snow for skiing and sledging as well, we have snow shoe trails and many restaurants offering take-away with warm drinks and food. Sure, the summit Rigi Kulm is not as high as other mountains, but the 360 degree view of 24 cantons, 13 lakes and maaaany other peaks is just unique and hard to top. See you soon again, snowy regards, Ragna, Customer Service

This is the main summit of Schwyzer Alps with the Rigi Kulm is 1798 m above sea. The mountain is surrounded by 3 lakes; Lake of luzern, Lake of Zug & Lake of Lauerz. Tourist have to come up to the Kulm by th oldest mountain railways named Rigi Railways.
