Our 13 day trip was one of best train experiences we have had. Rene being very familiar with the area and his past experience as a travel agent probably makes him and his Echo-tours group one of the best agents to work with. All of his rail tours are with small groups which allows the group to interact much more casually than with typical bus tours. The itinerary was very well planned taking advantage of the famous Swiss interconnected public transportation system. Let him know if you have any special interest (such as a church or museum) and he may be able to find time for you to see them. All travel was with a First-Class travel pass which gave us the best and often reserved seats – especially on trains. If anyone wants an introduction to Switzerland, its fabulous scenery, food and culture, and transportation system or to see the area again – we very much recommend them.

My niece and I just returned last week from a trip we took with Echo Trails . It was a spectacular trip. Every day out did the previous day in terms of grandeur. We were lucky enough to have great weather. the guides we had were skillful, friendly and caring. Our nine day itinerary was customized by them. We started in Lucerne for three nights and had a nice knowledgeable guide take us on a day long electric bike ride around the lake and a boat ride back. We did our own Pilatus day trip … well worth it. We then went to Engelberg with a nice Guide who teed us up for next few days. We hike a fantastic hike in that area. Then we met another guide John, who hiked with us to Frutt Melchese. He was very personable. Then we hiked another hike that eventually landed us in GrindelwAld. Lots of gondolas, trains and buses got us around on what was mostly a self guided itinerary. We took most of Echo Trails suggestions. Our tour planner Monica was very responsive to customizing our itinerary. The only reason I’m not giving Echo trails five stars is because once on the ground, there was not a continuity in the guides overseeing our trip and there seemed disconnect occasionally among the guides on some of our details. The company customer service, in terms of checking in with us every day, and seeing how things were going was lacking. We were on our own for most of the days and it seemed odd not to hear from them especially since we were on their tour. There was a significant snafu that they quickly fixed but it could’ve been a serious problem given the timing element. It just seemed that they should have had more attentiveness as they have their customers navigate from one stop and day to the next. Nor was there even a check in after the trip which is customary. Overall, it was confusing not to have a consistent person throughout the trip checking in after the last guide that was with us midway through. I’d also suggest that they give more suggestions for restaurants. The hotel choices they made overall were nice and well located. Other than that we had a fantastic time. It was a trip of a lifetime.

I spent a wonderful November day with Eve doing the William Tell hike. As a relative newcomer to Switzerland, Eve's knowledge and enthusiasm for her adopted country was infectious. In addition to the spectacular scenery and delicious local picnic lunch, she was a wealth of knowledge about the country and outdoor activities.

The schedule was easy and we weren't rushed. We had lots of sunshine and finishing the boat trip at sunset and in the dark was very pretty.

What a wonderful and memorable day in the beautiful outdoors.

Did a Lucerne half day city walking tour. First off, Lucerne is beautiful by itself and should be on everyone’s list. As for the guided tour with Denis, we found him to be very limited on knowledge and history. Literally stood in front of the oldest city Cathedral and when asked “when built?” he has no idea (it was 1633). Described the cathedral as “usual stuff, wood carving, gold, diamonds, etc” Seriously??

When passing what appeared to be a historic restaurant and inquired further, we were met with “its a typical restaurant”, with a few clicks with phone, discovered it boasts some of the oldest stained glass dating back to medieval times and one of the finest wine collections in all of Europe.

We don’t have unrealistic expectations nor expect a guide to know every propriety, but in todays day and age, with info at your fingertips, basic knowledge and importantly, back stories that that make paying for a guide worthwhile are the starting point.

Best advice, save your money and use Wikipedia.

Dear Mary, Our mission is to exceed clients expectations. It’s very obvious we didn’t meet yours. Thank you for your time to share your tour experiences with me. The city tour refund check is in the mail to you. Based on your feedback we are now tweaking the Guide’s protocols to ensure we continue to receive an overall 98% Good to Excellent Trip Advisor rating review for all our tours. With best, René Welti

My husband and I went on a 3-day tour. Our private tour guide, Petr Pospisil, was excellent: very knowledgeable, reliable, personable, and caring, sensitive to the needs of his clients and oftentimes went out of his way to please his clients. We strongly recommend him as a tour guide!

This was our first trip to Switzerland and we really wanted to experience the lake and countryside but we didn’t know where to begin. When I found Echo Trails, I was unsure what tour would be best for our 2 and 5 year old and only 48 hours in Lucerne. Communication with everyone at Echo Trails was professional, responsive, and very friendly. I was already impressed with the company even before the tour. Booking was easy as well.

John was our guide and I cannot thank him enough for his patience (with two young tired children), kindness, and knowledge. He was great to chat with and although the mountains brought all sorts of weather on our walk, we got to see the beautiful mountains, great views of the law, vineyards, cute farms and cows, the beautiful green countryside, and cute Swiss houses. We even stopped at a little bio farm shop and got some apple juice and ice cream for the kids! Thank you so much, John, for a wonderful experience.

I absolutely recommend Echo Trails!

In September our family spent 9 days in Switzerland celebrating my parents 50th wedding anniversary. We had an amazing time with Echo Trails. Owners René Welti and Suzanne Cairns gave us the full travel experience by train and boat visiting so many amazing places including Lugano, Zermatt, Murren and Lucerne. Rene is Swiss American which really helps. As guides, they are so organized, fun and full of historical information. Highlights included riding the Glacier Express, hiking to the base of the Matterhorn, strolling the quaint streets of Murren, taking the old cog wheel train up Mount Rigi, the boutique hotels we stayed, delicious meals and hikes among Swiss cows and wildflowers. This was the perfect trip for our family and one we will never forget. I highly recommend their tour if you’re interested in going to the Swiss Alps! Thanks René and Sue!

I had an amazing trip. I’ve lived in both the Netherlands and France and traveled extensively, and this vacation to Switzerland stands out as one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. I highly recommend ECHO Rails & Trails to take you there.
My main goal was to travel by train, which is both exhilarating and challenging. It's exhilarating because Swiss trains cover a vast network, but it can be tricky to navigate, with various trains, platforms, and connections to consider. Luckily, the ECHO guides took care of all these details for us. The guides were all exceptional individuals living in Switzerland, fluent in English (among other languages), and fantastic travel companions. I thoroughly enjoyed the diverse modes of transportation, from regular trains to funiculars, buses, cog railways, and cable cars of all sizes.
It's essential to be in good physical condition for this trip, as a lot of walking is involved. On average, we walked around 9,200 steps daily, totaling nearly 120,000 steps. During about half of our journey, we visited sites at altitudes ranging from 7,000 to 10,000 feet in the Alps, with our highest point reaching 11,710 feet. None of this was climbing, just walking/hiking, though some of the locations had rocky trails. This adventure was truly remarkable.

I never would have figured out how to get around Switzerland by myself! I am so beyond happy I booked a tour with Echo Trails. My best friend, sister and I all went on the tour. We had the best Swiss tour guides Monica and Andreas. They were so knowledgeable and engaged. We took trains, boats and buses and we saw so many things in a week! We never could have seen or done all that we did without the tour and our guides. We loved Echo Trails and are so happy we chose to use them.
