Since I started going to Balima, I have had a totally different respect for and experience of massage. I did not know it could be like this. There are so many reasons why I love it here, but the one thing which really makes this the gold standard of massages is that it is not formulaic. Each time the massage will be different, in line with what your body needs. You do not even need to point out knots, pain, stiffness, etc. the therapists are professionals and will find them and will not give up until they have worked them out. Balima, you have totally spoiled me – nowhere else manages to live up to the magic you perform and leave me totally relaxed and renewed.

Sadly the experience wasn’t relaxing AT ALL. The ladys, for both of us, kept putting their fingers under our bones, which was extremly painful. Also it felt like pinching and not massage the whole time. My boyfriend also told me the worker did the job randomly and didn’t do the same massage on the right and the left part of the body, plus was talking with her colleague during massage. Two days later, here we are with both back/shoulder pain. Whenever I move, I’m in pain, which wasn’t the case before the massage, I have to go to the physio for the pain to go away. I wish I could say it was a good experience, because the place was really what I was searching for and the receptionist was really professional and kind.

Response from BalimaSpa, Owner at Balima Day Spa

Hi Kristina, Thank you for bringing this to our attention. At Balima, we strive to insure all treatments are of the highest standard and guests leave with deep sense of relaxation. If this is not the case then we certainly prefer to know so that we can learn and improve. In your situation, it seems as though the pressure of the massage was the main issue. All our therapists are highly-trained experts in their field and their priority during an ‘Executive-back Rub’ is to break down any muscular tension around the back, neck and shoulders. If they discover tension in a certain area, it generally requires more attention and consequently is quite normal to spend more time on one side of the body. The discomfort that you feel afterwards depends on the amount of tension that was built up, how much was broken down and your body’s sensitivity to it. Often it can feel worse before it gets better as is quite standard for this kind of deep-tissue massage. Also, it can be a result of what your body is lacking before and after the treatment e.g. hydration, rest. Touching the bones is never part of our protocol but it may feel this way if there is not a lot of muscle tissue in the area as in your case. Obviously, we are sorry to hear about your negative experience and wish that you had brought this up with us at the time as treatments can be adapted with light, medium or strong pressure just by asking the therapist. For your future reference, I would suggest more of a relaxing-style massage with a lighter pressure. Finally, any talking between therapists during a couple’s massage is not tolerated so I will remind the team of our privacy policy. Best regards, Javed
