A striking work of art in a delightful Old City street it portrays an Old Testament Biblical story.

A gorgeous colourful assembly has as an apogee the figure of strongman Samson subduing and killing a lion. As described in the Judges book of the Bible.

It was built in 1544 and continues to be an enchanting addition to the streetscape.

One of the 12 beautiful fountains in Old Town Bern. I didn't do research before I visited Bern for the first time. I wish I did so I can plan more time. I spent one evening in the old town and found it very charming and the fountains/statues interesting. This Simson fountain is located near the famous clock tower (Zytglogge). You won't regret spending a few minutes to appreciate it and take some pictures. Thanks for other reviewers describing the story.

Located beside the Music Conservatory along Kramstrasse in Old Town, Bern, and built in 1545, this colorful statue recounts a scene from the Book of Judges of legendary strongman, Samson, killing a lion. One of many magnificent statues located throughout the city, it is worthy of a stop--and a few photos.

It was built in 1527 and decorated with a figure by Hans Gieng of Samson taming the lion in 1543.
The fountain represents the Biblical story of Samson killing a lion found in Judges 14:5-20. According to the story, Samson was born to a sterile Israelite couple on the conditions that his mother and her child (Samson) abstain from all alcohol and that he never shave or cut his hair. Because of his commitment to live under these conditions, Samson is granted great strength. As a young man he falls in love with a Philistine woman and decides to marry her. At this time, the Philistines ruled over the Israelites and Samson's decision to marry one causes great concern among his family. He calms their concerns and travels to marry his love. On the way he is attacked by the lion and with his incredible strength kills the lion.

This fountain is a testament to Samson's strength - he has the lion's mouth apart with his hands. The statue was donated by the Burcher's Guild so it is not surprising that he has a weapon and butcher's tools on his belt!

The Simsonbrunnen is topped with the biblical symbol of Samson defeating a lion. Samson was given great powers of strength as long as he did not cut his hair.

This is another fountain in the Old Town that serves as part of the UNESCO World Heritage designation.

The Simsonbrunnen or Samson statue/fountain is another of Bern's gems. This one doesn't have the recurring bear theme but rather a lion as the animal featured with the strongman Samson.
It is in a road filled with historical sights, mark it on your map as another point of interest!

I love all of the sculptures/fountains of Bern. They are all so detailed and easy to find. This one also dates to the 16th century!
