The French Church is the oldest church in Bern being built in 1269. It was at first a Catholic Church and walking throughout the interior, one can see this. Even though it became a Protestant Church later on, many of the paintings and the stained glass windows were kept intact. While it is not as beautiful inside as other churches, it does retain much of its beauty even after the change to a Protestant church. Many of the older churches in Switzerland that have undergone the change from a Catholic church to a Protestant church are fairly plain and devoid of much character except for the architecture. Compared to the churches in Italy, Germany and France, the Swiss churches are rather vanilla. The French Church however has retained some of its former splendor and the church has a simplistic beauty on its exterior and interior. It is well worth a visit. It was extremely conveniently located for us as our hotel was right across the street from the church.…

Even using the map, this church was difficult to find! The people in Bern (and all over Switzerland) are very helpful and were able to point the way to find the Franzosische Kirche. The church was reconstructed a few times; most recently in the early 1900s. It is a very simply decorated church. I understand that choirs give performances here!…

My favorite church in Bern. I was very impressed by the beautiful old wall paintings. The church is rather austere and somehow I could feel the history of this place vibrating in the stones. This church exudes a special atmosphere which is hard to describe.
