Insanely beautiful downtown of Switzerland's capital city. No wonder why it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site!
While planning for my Swiss trip, I wanted to go straight from Zurich to Interlaken, but I realized that the train there goes via Bern, the capital. I knew that Bern was the capital but what was in there? I felt shocked that I almost missed a shining gem such as this old town! It truly deserved its UNESCO World Heritage Site designation because it's just so stunning! So if you're going from Zurich or Geneva to Interlaken and the train stops at Bern, get off the train and explore the city for a few hours! You will not regret it!

The first sight of any city is always surprising, but in the case of Bern it’s amazing to realise that every image you see is beautiful; it’s simply unparalleled. The capital of Switzerland, whose historic centre was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco, is seductive, attractive and absolutely charming; from medieval squares, to contemporary museums, an astronomical clock or a fantastic natural environment, there are many things to see in Bern, a set of medieval streets, totally pedestrian, narrow and winding that delight all tourists who visit Bern and that causes everyone, without exception, to end up surrendered at his feet. Let’s start!

You can totally visit on a Sunday!
Whilst a previous reviewer may be correct in pointing out that lots of places are loads on Sunday, if you aren't interested in shopping then this shouldn't be too much of an issue. There are plenty of interesting things to see in this town which are open on Sunday, such as the churches. And you can admire the beautiful green buildings!

    UNESCO World Heritage Site
The Bern's Old Town is the No.1 Must See Place when you go to Bern. I admit that I had doubts before I came here but then, I fully understood why this old town had become a UNESCO World Heritage site! Its calmness, red colour roofed medieval buildings, long cobbled streets, colourfully painted fountains, & the beautiful & elegant clock towers, have made this Old Town be possibly the most pretty & best-preserved Historic Town in Switzerland! The west side of the Old Town is more busy as it's filled with shops, restaurants & markets, whereas the east side is more quiet, calm & peaceful. Tips: It's easy to get here from the Bern's Station too, just look up & follow the Zetgloge clock tower or the Kafigturm tower. Highly recommended for anyone who visited Switzerland!

This part, on the river, is the old original town. Been has fabulous architecture and we were fascinated by the octagonal clay roof tiles, never seen elsewhere. Some good independent shops up on the main streets.

The best old town I’ve ever been in. All the old buildings with underground caverns converted to shops, amazing roof structures and chimneys you can see from most high areas around the city and facades and fountains all worth stopping to admire and photograph.

Best medieval old town which you can just imagine back when it was built

I have been living in a village very near Berne for many years, and the old city is kind of very familiar to me. I take it for granted, and dont think about it much. Untill I visit it with someown who is not from Berne, and is not used to this beautiful and amazing old city. Which happened in April, with a friend from Germany. Showing her Old City, the market on saturday, the Münsterplattform, the Kleine Schanze, the bridges, the Bärenpark etc. - reminded me what a wonderful and beautiful city Berne is.

Having visited all of Switzerland during our 8 days tour, I can say two most beautiful cities are Bern and Lucerne.
Bern, the capital is situated at the sharp bend of Aare river. The entire old town is under UNESCO. Walking its greatly preserved medieval streets looks like stepping back in that era. The area is very compact and pretty small, so you can cover it in less than a day.

Bern is the de facto capital of Switzerland, referred to as the "federal city Bern" is the fifth-most populous city in Switzerland. Built on a narrow hill bordered on three sides by the river Aare, its compact layout has remained essentially unchanged since its construction during the twelfth to the fifteenth century.

During our day trip at Bern from Interlaken , we got a chance to go around the old city of Bern. It's beautiful. We could see amazing sights of various landmarks and understand their significance . Among other things we visited various fountains, Old Clock Tower, Bundesplatz, Federal Building, Aare River , the Bear Pit ,Cathedral at Munsterplatz, Rathaus Bern . Bern is a city that has retained it's old charm yet embracing modernity.

Do visit

It’s a great city for a tourist to get around everything is fairly close together, although some hills but manageable.

Love the winding and flowing streets and side street you can get lost in yourself just pottering around the different types of shops.

With historical sites everywhere you look at great and the old city has kept its charm with very little modern monstrosity’s ruining the vibe of the old city.

Was also great to have the Xmas markets in December an extra bonus.

Enthralling it was to wander around wonderful streetscapes in the bright early autumn sunshine.

Beautiful buildings in various hues comprise the streetscapes and many had a profusion of window boxes with vibrant flowers.

Archways are plentiful and it was great walking through admiring all on either side. Einsteinhaus is a notable museum, where the Nobel laureate genius was in residence for some years in the early 1900s.

Zytglogge has pride of place as a captivating Clock Tower along the cobbled street. Numerous exquisite fountains are dotted throughout. Zähringerbrunnen being just one.

We took a short day trip to Bern from Zurich and walked the old town for a few hours. We enjoyed the buildings and sites, taking pictures of the fountains and statues all around. It is a nice place to take a walkaround.
