I work about 2min form this place.
Located close to the Bärengraben, down where the Aare river flows.
From the 15th to the middle of the 20th century the "Matte" was a typical lower class neighbourhood, filled with tanners and brothels. They spoke their own lingo, the so called "Matteenglisch". The population today is around 1100 and the lower class has reallocated. Some good restaurants can be found here or you might want to stroll along the Aare river. Why not take a look to avoid all other tourists? The map shows the wrong place...like I said, it's located very close to the Bärengraben!

Two or three hundred years ago, the artisans used to live here; but worked up in the City on the hill. They lived in another World here; small doors, low ceilings, little windows and very old houses; and a River that sometimes bursts its banks. It is a remarkably quiet and peaceful place to walk through. True, it is a little shabby and somehow lacking in colour; and yet....I can hear the sounds of the past going by.

Charming and very old part of the city. Matte is set below the level of the central medieval city of Bern, and was isolated enough to have its own dialect. Charming shops on winding streets along the river, under the great wall of the city. A glass elevator takes you up to the Münsterplatz and its Cathedral.

The „Matte“ district is a very nice and well maintained yet small district of Berne.

Great for walking and to see how locals did live centuries ago.

Watch out for high waters of the river Aare - Matte might not be accessible.

It's also fascinating to realise how close the river Aare is, that even nowadays floodings are catching up with this particularly part of town and still people love to live there and enjoy being so close to both the river Aare as well as the city centre

The matte is the oldest city district of Berne. You can reach it easily from the Bärenpark only a few minutes to walk, by bus no 30 from the mainstation of Bern ( direktion Matte- Marzili- Bahnhof) or from the Münsterplatform. From the Platform you can take the historic lift from 1897"Senkeltram" which runs from 6 to 20.30 (sundays from 7) or take the 183 stairs of the Mattetreppe down to the matte.mind your head if you are tall, the arcade is very low!The matte has a turbulend history. In the early centurys traders and fishers brouht here their goods for sale. They developed their own secret language, the mattenenglisch. This language is still spoken by some people, In the 19th century the matte was a slum. Only the poorest of the poor lived here. Today it is a district with many listed houses and nice restaurants. You can find here the last washhouse of the city . It can be rent for occasions.A worth seeing district of Berne.

Matte is the oldest district of Bern and was its harbour. It was formerly home to workers and craftsmen living is simple, half timber houses. Now you stroll by studios, bespoke shops and cafes.

Many people miss this place going from Berner´s Bears directly to Zytglogge (Horloge) and market streets. Don´t hesitate to go down the river Aare and to feel old times in an old fishery neighbourhood.

Once upon a time, this was the fishing district. It can be seen very well from the Münsterplattform as it is located at river level.
