Bern’s Natural History Museum is one of the best renowned in Switzerland. Its historic dioramas exhibitions of native and exotic animals are unique in Central Europe and form the basis of the institution’s international reputation. Bern’s oldest museum has made a name for itself in recent years by holding attractive thematic exhibitions such as «c’est la vie or the brand new exhibition «Apocalypse – End Without End». One of the museum’s best-known exhibits is Barry the world-famous rescue dog, a St. Bernard who recently had an entire exhibition dedicated to him. The giant Planggenstock crystals now permanently on display form another highlight. The NMBE is a family museum and runs numerous activities for families and children. It also hosts regular events such as a «dead animal bar» which is part of a program series entitled «Help, it’s alive!».

As we walked from room to room I noticed that everything was displayed very neatly and well lit. As it had started to rain just before we entered it was also a nice escape. I would definitely go back.

This is a place to go on a rainy day with kids, but they shouldn't already have seen half of the world before..... lots of exotic animals and the famous Barry (dog who saved people lost in avalanches)

If you have an affinity for St. Bernard's, then you will enjoy this museum. There wis an exhibit celebrating this heroic dog. If not- then it's a nice place for kids.

The array of items to look at is very wide and sometimes quite fascinating. There is one big problem...CHILDREN! They charge through the exhibits like Ghenghis Khan`s marauding army. Blood curdling screams and shouts as 35 kilo`s of flesh and bone screams around an exhibit case...More

Free to enter with a Swiss Pass, this rather small sized museum is around15-20min walk from the city centre (not that far). Lots of interesting exhibits and kids loved it. Place was clean. Go check out Barry the dog. Recommended.

we had a good time at this museum. Enough to look at. Our 5 year old did get bored quickly at this museum though.

Don't expect a museum like in Washington or London - this place is small but it has some very nice exhibits and it is great for kids - they love to visit the animal sections. It is also in walking distance to the city center...More

Berne's history is more interesting than I expected, and this museum is bigger than I expected too. I thought I'd be in and out within the hour, but I could have stayed half the day. It ranges from prehistoric to modern, and well laid out.

You can get Tram 6, 7 or 8 to Helvetiaplatz. It's a 5min walk from there. There is a café on the ground floor.
