About
Popular in Bern - observed in the whole world. The Natural History Museum Bern was officially founded in 1832. In 1936 it moved into a new building in Bernastrasse deemed an excellent example of the “Neue Sachlichkeit“ style. The building was extended in 1998. The museum has 5100 square metres of exhibition space and an international reputation founded initially on its historical dioramas. Aside from Barry, the NMBE is famous for housing the giant Planggenstock crystals and for outstanding contemporary exhibitions. The museum's collection contains around 6.5 million objects. The Naturhistorisches Museum Bern is also a place of research conducted by the 22 scientists responsible for the collections, and functions as a venue for cultural events.

As ornithologist, you may be surprised by the large collection if bird skins this Museum guard in its cabinets. Astonish collections of South American birds, especially the trogonids.

Spent a enjoyable couple of hours wandering the halls of the museum. Not being able to read the German explanations wasn't too much of a hinderance. Might help tourists if there was more English cards! Only seemed to be in one area of the whole museum and the Apocalypse expo was very hard to comprehend without it. For an international destination I think more languages are needed... like in the Bern Historical / Einstein Museum.

a very well appointed museum located near the U.S. embassy - it has over 200 life-sized dioramas. The most famous attraction in the museum is the stuffed hide of Barry, the St. Bernard dog, who is believed to have saved the lives of several dozen people from an all but certain icy death in avalanches during the first part of the 19th century.

Interesting building with a pretty wide variety of content. I especially loved the very large film at the Insect Exhibition. It was the highlight for me, alot of other stuff was a bit more aimed at children (for who i can imagine it's a really great museum). I really did not care for the diorama's from the the 60s with all the stuffed animals. Some were quite amazing to see up close, but somehow the sheer amount of dead animals depressed me a bit, honestly. Perhaps if it wasn't as densely presented I would experience it in a different way. Also as an English speaker I might have missed necessary context around the diorama's, so maybe some more English would've been nice.

Easy to get to by tram. One of the cheaper museums to visit...8chf per adult. Loads of kids there the day we visited, they all looked like they were having lots of fun. We found some of the exhibits a little strange by comparison to British museums. Not big so doesn't take too long to get round.

One of the coolest museum in Swiss. Nice collection of rocks, stuff animals, marine life skeleton and of course Barry the Dog.

This museum was perfect for a rainy day for our family. Lots of exhibits, many interactive, and a huge range. There was a play area for kids, an art exhibition in the same building and as well as the cafe there was a designated indoor picnic area. We spent several hours here happily with a 3 and 1 year old.

Good museum and well worth a visit to see the rock (minerals) exhibition with details of where they were found
There are other exhibits too, with animals and insects as well as marine mammal skeletons
There's a small café in the entrance hall but it's food choice is very limited
Of all the museums and places of interest we have seen in Europe though, this is the only time that the exhibitions do not have any English translations - primarily German and some French
A note to the Management – be good to add English to the display cases

I love the geological exhibition downstairs. It's not a huge museum but all the parts are interesting. Careful if you are there with young kids: there is an exhibition about life that involves sex, pregnancy and birth (nothing graphic but might lead to awkward questions), so if your kids don't know about the birds and bees yet, you might want to avoid that part.

We were on a Pilgrimage of sorts to the origins of the St, Bernard, so the only thing we visited in the museum was the Barry exhibit. The coolest thing was a photo booth where you can take a picture with different backgrounds and Barry.

How do I get there using public transportation? Is there a restaurant or café onsite?

You can get Tram 6, 7 or 8 to Helvetiaplatz. It's a 5min walk from there. There is a café on the ground floor.
