A major street for shopping. The name "Free" Street refers to the times back in the Middle Ages when you could transport your goods down this street for free but if you wanted to stop and sell them, then you had to pay a fee,

If you like to shopping, you can go there in Basel. There are some brands which are not expensive ones, but not so many. Also it is close to middle of the city.

a very disappointing shopping street for a town like Basel. It's much more fun to wander around in the little streets surrounding this one.

Otherwise uninteresting street with large relatively modern buildings and expensive shops. If you come to Basel to buy things this is for you, if you come for the culture, history and art it is not. Travel through the old streets with their old houses running on either side of this street.

The Freie Street is full with markets and shops you can browse but of course the prices are Switzerland prices so consider shopping here only if you have enough money with you. There are beautiful little streets and little shops nearby. The most beautiful thing is you may run into some really talented street artists if you are lucky. So... More

Freie strasse is a shopping street with several high end shops, like juwelers, Cartier's and Louis Vuitton, but also shops like Zara, Benetton, ... The true beauty of the street reveals itself when you stop looking at the windows, but start looking upwards at the beautiful architecture.

As Basel is a small town, this shopping street is their equivalent of a high street. Not very busy although there were some interesting shops.

I was a bit underwhelmed by the Freie Strasse. There was a collection of some high end stores, shops and restaurants. The buildings in the area were a mixture of old and modern design. I did not feel the need to spend much time in the area as I was not in the mood for shopping at the time, but... More

Interesting history behind the name of the road thanks to our tour guide Manuel of Free Walks tour. It was very busy Saturday when we went. Lots of Black Friday bargains.

This is a pedestrian friendly area that is full of fashion houses, confectionery shops, boutiques and cafes. These shops are also available in most European cities. Being Switzerland, prices were rather high for what was on offer.
