This was great fun we had a river trip on the Ryhtaxi called a Prosecco Tour. The weather was not great but the trip was really enjoyable and we had a great skipper with great knowledge about the area . Really recommend it and the price is very reasonable . Something to enjoy even if the weather is unsettled .

I see this is very highly rated - by me also. Note that this is not a fancy boat ride. This is a 5-10 minute ride from one side of Basel to the other. But it's quiet and charming. The boat moves by the strength of the current and a rudder - not with any motor. And each ride has no more than a handful of people. So it's very relaxing. Charming.

A must do, especially now when there are fewer tourists. We crossed twice and were alone both times. Gave a chance to chat with the ferrymen. The boats are 100% clean, use the energy of the river to push them across. The view up from the water is a perspective you don't a chance to enjoy.

The small ferry in Basel crosses the river back and forth very calm and smoothly. You feel that you have been returned to the Middle Ages. Very excellent experience for tourists.

Rheinfähre is a ferry ride in Rhein River. If you ask me is this worth it.... I would say if you decided to pay for whole boat and propose, it's definitely worth. But I think walking around the river bank is good enough. And it's unnecessary to take a boat ride if you are not staying in Basel for few days and run out of activity.

I had seen the ferry from up the bridge and from the shore and decided to take a ride. It is certainly a quaint old way of crossing the Rhine. Takes you back to the time before mechanized travel!

Basel is sitting on an important strategic location and a global center for scientific research and development. Although it is not as popular as cities of Geneva, Zurich or Lucerne, it has its own charming characters and easy going atmosphere, not so touristy. The Rhein River flows through the city- not only divides the city in two parts, but also shares the body water with the neighboring countries- Germany and France- at the the Dreiländereck, a monument in Basel, Switzerland where Germany, France and Switzerland meet. Riding on one of the four crossing Rhein motor-less boats is an affordable experience that you don't want to miss. The single ride is 1.60 CHF. Each boat is guided by a long steel cable that hung and supported between two opposite sides of the river bank, and moved by the river currents below the boat. The steel cable that tied to the boat keeps it from drifting away. There are 4 river crossing lines; each serving at different part of the Rhein. I boarded the schifflände that is closed to the Mittlere Brücke; on the side after past the complex of Hotel Les Trois Rois. The afternoon sun made the ride very pleasant with sunny side views of the Mittlere Brücke. Riding is smooth and short. Fare is cheap, therefore no discount with the Swiss halfcard. You pay after you board. Riding this boat on a clear warm day is a nice choice while visiting Basel. To get there, take any city tram or bus that stops at Rheingasse, walk toward Mittlere Brücke(but do not go pass it.). Go down steps to your right side of the river bank; for about 300 meters you will see boat crossing or landing point at your side of the schifflände.

Four tiny pedestrian manual, flow-driven ferries across the Rhine link the two halves of Basel (Grossbasel & Kleinbasel). Ever since I was a kid, these were a favorite place of mine. In summer, we often took it and then jumped into the water half way through the trip (which is strictly forbidden by the way). It's like a time travel, strong sensations, a magnificent view of Basel up and downstream, and these curious, fascinating personalities that the ferry men usually are. You completely slow down mentally, like in meditation, and yet it's very fast and efficient: in ten minutes you're on the other side. In fact, I often do a to-fro-to, just to prolong the pleasure. The Münsterfähri is the most popular, but they're all really cool. Small fee.

These traditional ferry boats are charming. You can integrate the Rhine crossings into your down town visit. After visiting the cathedral and beautiful Münsterplatz surrounded by medieval buildings you can descend to the Münster Fähre Leu (lion) and cross the river with the water power of the flowing water. On the other side (Kleinbasel) you can walk along medieval houses to the Rhine bridge(Mittlere Brugg) and cross back into the town center to the market place with the red house (Rotshus).

A must whilst in Basel. Amazing to see the boats and how the current is used to propel them.
Great views of the river, the architecture and scenery. Although short it feels like it adds some adventure to what is simply crossing a river!
