About
Dynamic, experimental, rigorous, open-minded, and accessible, Kunsthalle Basel is a place for audacious art and exhibitions by emerging artists. Established in 1872 by the Basler Kunstverein (Basel Art Association), Kunsthalle Basel is world renowned for engaging with pioneering practices in contemporary art. With its majestic, skylighted spaces, the Kunsthalle is a truly exceptional place to see art. It organizes about eight exhibitions per year, featuring international and Swiss artists. The shows often take innovative forms and involve newly commissioned works. Throughout the year the Kunsthalle also presents dynamic public programming-artists' talks, lectures, film screenings, and readings-to contextualize the featured artists' practices. Kunsthalle Basel looks back with pride on a long history of exhibitions that nurtured the development of art and supported, early in their careers, emerging artists who would go on to become part of art history. In the early twentieth century it hosted major solo shows by Edvard Munch, Paul Gauguin, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Vincent van Gogh, and Piet Mondrian. In subsequent decades it featured Jackson Pollock, Alighiero Boetti, Joan Jonas, Jeff Koons, and Richard Serra. And more recently we have been proud to present solo shows by Moyra Davey, Mark Leckey, Superflex, Piotr Uklanski, Danh Vo, and Anicka Yi, to name only a few.

After modernization, the spaces avaliable at kunsthalle is enormous and you could discover at a time, the collection of the museum and also temporary presentation which are always very interesting. one restriction, you will need to be in good conditions to go up and down the several part of the kunsthalle. thats wy i recomand you to pay several visits to the museum in order to see part of it.

We were here few days ago during Art Basel. 3 couples. Booked much in advance. The place triple itself during that period and accommodate hundreds instead of couple dozens. We reserved a table inside. We appreciate the bussy time during the fair, but that is not an excuse from a top restaurant to provide me a meal I didn't not order. I asked for the beef fillet and received the sliced antrecot while the waiter insisted it was the fillet. My wife never got the shrimps she ordered. By 11 PM , 10 minutes after the other 5 finished their main dishes, we had to cancel her' s. No apologies were received. There goes the swiss precision.
Terrible evening. Quite traumatic. Never again.

Dear Doron608, your review obviously relates to "Restaurant Kunsthalle," but not our institution for contemporary art. Therefore I would appreciate if you could delete your review or post on the right page. Thank you.

Walking to the Kunstmuseum I was a dumb jet-lagged tourist, saw the sign for the Kunsthalle, and went in and paid 12FR to see the exhibits. This is a conceptual art space that had two desperately pedestrian artists on display. I love contemporary art - and gladly support alternative museums - but the curation here is awful, accompanied by viewer guide texts that read like over-intellectualized bad college essays desperate to justify art of little aesthetic or intellectual integrity. One of the two exhibitions was for action art so that it was actually pointless to visit the large galleries hosting the artist's supplies on display - it would have been kind of the person at the desk to explain I would be bored to tears or angered by this so-called "exhibit". What a waste of beautiful gallery space. If you are going to empower two artists to have the gift of an expansive forum, in a city known for strong contemporary art, choose more interesting work please.

Check which exhibitions are on before visiting. There was only one gallery open when we visited, it presented a very interesting exhibition on rural architecture in India but we were expecting more given the reputation this gallery seems to have with arts tourism.
A short walk from Kunstmuseum, the train station and city centre, next to the theatre and great cafes, bars, restaurants. The restaurant in the basement of this building is absolutely stunning!

We visited the Kunsthalle recently as part of the yearly Museum Night (all museums open until 2am). The Kunsthalle exhibit was not at all my taste, with work that was principally very basic paintings from with little form. I guess that was the theme - there were a few outstanding pieces which demonstrated amazing talent. I have been here before though with interesting exhibits of young artists - so it is a hit or miss.

As part of the museums night (pay one entrance fee and access that night almost all museums of Baesl) I went to explore the Kunsthalle.
It is probably hard to rate an Art Place that has constent changing art. So depending on what is on display, how many people are going etc the impression of this place can vary a lot.
I personally liked the arty young dynamic feeling of this place. But if would have time for only museum in Basel, then this would not make it to the top.

When you visit Basel in Switzerland you absolutely have to make a stop at Kunsthalle Basel. This institution shows international upcoming artists in its temporary exhibitions, such artists which afterwards are collected by wellknown museums or collectors. If you are not yet in love with contemporary art your sure will be after a visit at Kunsthalle Basel!

As dumb luck would have it, I managed to find the Kunsthalle Museum on social media. Although I wouldn't consider myself a contemporary art aficionado, the artifacts on display did spark my interest. It also sparked a great source of entertainment. It takes a particular individual to imagine such bizarre concepts. If I were you, try to find out which art displays are shown before slipping the 12 francs/person.
