What a surprise

This looks like a church, but it served as the town hall. There is an English translation to explain what you are seeing.

The Rathaus is definitely one of the key highlights of Basel. The paintings on the facade are unique and you get a sense of awe as you walk through the entrance in to the courtyard and see even more paintings and a beautiful regal gilded statue and staircase. We weren't able to see inside the building itself but this was... More

A definite must see on your trip to Basel. You can see that the city historically had plenty of money which they have lavished on the Rathaus . The red brickwork stands out and is very very impressive. Along with the statues in the entrance way. Very enjoyable

You can't really miss the bright red Rathaus. The more you look at the facade, the more you see, then walk through the arched gateways into a very impressive painted court yard. Ascend the stairs and walk through the cloister to see the equally impressive rear of the building.

A lovely architecture and presentation. Over festive season a lot of old musical instruments been played in and very popular part of Basel. Well worth a visit and it's admission free.

Stopped here during a food/music festival in late August. this building and courtyard are certainly worth stopping and spending some time taking in the ornate painting and architecture.

Do visit the Markplaz and see the wonderfully 'stylish' Rathaus (Town hall). Go into the centre and see the murals. Well worth it. The building is 500 years old and the murals are roughly the same age.

The city hall of Basel is beside the Munster cathedral the most recognizable landmark of the city. It is the center of town with a lively market in front of it in the morings until 13:00. The walls are full of paintings. It is worth to take a break there to relax in the cool shade during summer or by... More

The Rathaus has great architecture and has wonderful painting and carving on the outside walls. The clock towel is ornately decorated too. The market square is a great place to visit to buy local fruit, cheeses, meat and breads.
