When we went to the fountain some of the pieces were covered in ice.It was still worth a visit as we could see three of Tinguely's mechanical pieces working in the fountain. It was interesting to see how they worked.

Jean Tinguely was a well respected man in Basel and now we can admire his work freely near by the Theater Basel. Each of the characters has a name and a story behind. Tip: go in the passage under the fountain, close to the steps, to see how the mechanism works.

If you a already in the area for dinner it is an interesting sight to walk by. There are many restaurants within 500 ft.

Well worth a quick visit while in base, the mechanical art really is worth seeing. Just 2-300 meters from the centre of the city you're free to wander up without paying a fee.

I read a lot about Tinguely and the fountain, so it was definitely on our list to visit when in Basel. I knew it's gonna be unique, but the winter look was even prettier, since the water froze around the pipes and it was like different ice sculptures on the water.

A free attraction in Basel. Beautiful in summer and winter. During the warm days you can come here and bring your sandwich, while watching the water games play. In winter the fountain can freeze in certain parts, which will then give a nice icy look to the attraction. Check it out, take some fotos and enjoy being in the center... More

It's a very simple thing to go and see - we followed these coloured trails around the city which were fun and a good way to fit everything in plus learn a little without taking a formal tour.

My first impression upon sighting this attraction was one of sheer delight. I couldn't decide if I was looking at the creation of a mad scientist, or the work of a genius. Regardless, my enjoyment of this feature was immense. The operation of the fountain was erratic, yet playful, and with the wrought iron pieces and not stone, it is... More
