This large, black, contemporary sculpture is on display in the underground tunnels of the 16th fortress, Rocca Paolina. It’s a striking contrast between modern and ancient.
The sculpture is located in the room known as the Salone delle Acque. If you come down via the escalators next to the Carducci Gardens, then it’s one of the rooms or spaces off to your right.
Despite its size, I almost overlooked it. Its blackness blended into the dark, shadowy space of the vaulted room.
The very modern work is minimal and and block-like. It’s main feature is a semi-circular shape at the top that rotates. Its slow, silent movement adds to the overall eeriness of the place.
I’m not sure that I ‘got’ any significant sense of purpose or meaning from the work but it's a dramatic piece in a dramatic space.
The sculptor is Albert Burri and the work was permanently located here in 1980.
