In the wonderful historic center of beautiful Perugia, is the magnificent Piazza IV Novembre, the hub and convergence of the 5 main roads of the medieval city. It is a truly extraordinary place, symmetrical in shape and with the natural slope of the ground, on which the major and important monuments of the city overlook. A true triumph of beauty and magnificence, with the Fontana Maggiore in the center and, on two opposite sides, the Cathedral of San Lorenzo and the Palazzo dei Priori: wonderful! In the square are held the most important city events, in addition to the walk of citizens and tourists. Charming and spectacular place, absolutely worth visiting!!!!

We took the escalators from the ground level to reach to the top Old Town area.
The date November 4th and the statue of King Emanuele are both important in Italy.
There are impressive medieval stone buildings that stood tall around the piazza.
Keep walking and there are more monumental buildings and churches

This is the heart of old Perugia with a large square featuring a beautiful 13th century fountain, the Duomo and several medieval buildings that make this seem like something out of a Hollywood movie set. From the steps of the Duomo, students, locals and tourists alike sit and watch the comings and goings in this piazza. A wonderful place to take in the atmosphere and energy of a city that remains true to its past.

Beautiful square and beautiful city.
It feels like going back to the Middle Ages, very well kept buildings. Many places to visit and many places overlooking the square.

This is the historic centre of Perugia and the best starting place to explore the city. Even if you are on a very tight itinerary, you will want to spend some time here.
The main sights in the piazza are:
i) Palazzo Dei Priori - a 14th century fortress-like palazzo with a giant bronze griffin and lion guarding its doors. It houses the National Gallery and although we didn’t have time to do this, it was free to go into the lobby where we could see replicas of the griffin and lion up close.
ii) Sala Dei Notari (free) - part of the Palazzo dei Priori, with elaborate frescoes featuring coats of arms of wealthy and powerful Perugian families. Disappointingly, we missed out on this. It wasn’t obvious and we didn’t realise it was there until too late.
iii) Duomo / Cathedral - an unusual cathedral, with a strange facade. The pink and white marble tiling is unfinished and the front entrance faces away from the piazza. From the Piazza IV Novembre, you only see the side. Inside, a curious highlight is the “Santo Anello” (the wedding ring of the Virgin Mary). Free entry.
iv) Fontana Maggiore - a magnificently ornate marble fountain built in 1278 which takes centre stage in the piazza.
v) Loggia - A minor sight, this is the arched verandah-like attachment along the side of the cathedral. Look for the ‘Stone of Justice’, an inscription which records the cancellation of the public debt in 1234. Free entry.
NOTE: Activities are sometimes held in the square. When we were there, an outdoor promotional basketball competition was being held. The temporary courts and trucks detracted from the ancient feel of the piazza but it was fun to watch the night-time games.

Impressive central city place. Good that traffic is very limited. Surrounded by several historical buildings. Just wear comfortable shoes, not high heels.

The lovely Fontana Maggiore, the unbelievably beautiful and peaceful Cattedrale di San Lorenzo and the Palazzo dei Priori with its magnificent griffon and lion. All for free. It was a joy!

We were here over Xmas and the piazza had lots of stalls selling trinkets and food, as well as live music. Fontana Maggiore is in the middle of the piazza, but a lot of stuff was being renovated/restored. Despite this, we really enjoyed it, lots of places to eat and drink. Perugia town Center is very cute and very walkable.

It’s one of the most picturesque squares in central Italy, with the three main sights of the city center (Priori Palace and the National Gallery, Cathedral, Fontana Maggiore fountain) all located here. Perfect for pictures all year round.
