It wasn’t obvious to me that this was a separate piazza. It just seems to flow on from the main square, Piazza IV Novembre.
Basically its the area that runs from the front steps and main entrance of the cathedral, around to the right hand side.
It’s worth noting that the cathedral has a very odd orientation. You’d expect to find it fronting onto Piazza IV Novembre but it doesn’t. Most tourists enter the cathedral from the main piazza and they probably never realise that this is just a side entrance.
Instead the main facade faces Piazza Danti.
Originally the large bronze statue of Pope Julius III stood in here at the front of the cathedral. However in 1899, it was moved, relegated to the side of the cathedral, to make room for a (now non-existent) electric tram rail. As some sort of consolation prize, the piazza was named after the sculptor, Vincenzo Danti.
You’ll also find the following here:
* The tourist entrance to the ancient Etruscan well at #18 (the well-head is located just a few short steps away in Piazza Piccinino).
* Mr Norcy at Piazza Danti - delicious pulled pork rolls
* Via Ulisse Rocchi runs off the piazza and leads down to the ancient Etruscan Arch (less than 5 min away)
