There is a red, open air bus tour offered by the tourism office many times a day from March to November. Excellent overview of the city sparing you all the up and downhill walking to see various city gates and superb views of the Umbran countryside around the city. Tour tickets 14 euros for adults, earphones provided so you can listen in Italian or English. Tour starts in Piazza Italia, buy tickets at a small booth there. If coming by car to Perugia, follow signs to city center until you see indications for Parcheggio Partigiani (there are many parking signs before this, just continue to Partigiani). It's a large garage with easy parking spaces. From inside the garage you can take one of about 5 escalators that will bring you up to the historic center. Once you exit last escalator you will be in Piazza Italia. The bus tour isn't a substitute for pounding the pavement of the piazzas, churches and museums. Later in the day we hired a guide to take us to most important sites. Use the bus tour to orient you before delving deeper into the city. Excellent value!

The first impression was of not being welcome but we persevered with our kiwi smiles and she became very helpful. We had to return and she remembered and sorted our problem.
We have found that the initial experience with people when they realize we don't speak the language is not all that helpful but again peservence seems to make a difference!
It is difficult because you can feel quite vulnerable and info site should bend over backwards to ease the way.

Perugia's tourist office really lets the city down, and only a small brown "i" sign on the pavement indicates its location. There is practically no information that one can browse – you have to ask for everything. When we asked for places to see contemporary art, the assistant directed us to the National Gallery which, as far as we could tell from the previous day's visit, had no such thing. The tourist brochure at €2.50 was a good starting point for the city, but as for conversation and ideas about the things we were interested in, nothing was forthcoming. To be fair, they were extremely helpful with bus and train timetables.

Perugia is a hidden gem of Italy. The city is incredibly beautiful, people are kind and friendly, the food is delicious and the views are breathtaking. Wandering around the city never gets boring. Getting around the city is very easy, there are multiple ways to get around and the train station is well connected to the Centro Storico. Perugia is among my top five cities in Italy.

Horrible service and people!! I asked for directions to the stained glass museum. I was told it was out of town and I should go to the chocolate factory. She gave me prices and directions to the chocolate place. We had no desire to do this. I had googled directions for the museum and just wanted to be pointed the right way.
I realized I was lied to since the museum was only a 10 minute walk from our current location. I suspect the tourist office gets paid to send people to certain places.
Regardless the stained glass museum was wonderful and the only reason to go to perugia in my opinion.

Beautiful city, but with a terrible tourist office: the person working there didn't give us any useful info and looked quite bothered by our presence.

The tourist office is centrally located. They are very helpful and they suggested a city bus tour that was excellent. In one short hour we saw more of the city than we would ever discover on foot. Go see them and they will gladly help answer your questions. Whitebeard83

Attention!
Parked cars are broken up in public places during the day.
No help can be expected from any side. The city administration accepts this condition.
The whole city is full of eerie people waiting for an opportunity.
Never again.

The tourist office was not helpful. I had called before we arrived and looked forward to getting some maps and information.

There's definitely a limit on the number of questions you're allowed to ask here. We wanted to find out how to get to Assisi on public transport, but after printing out a train timetable, which was helpful, it became apparent that was our lot. She really made us feel unwelcome and uncomfortable.
Thankfully we made it to Assisi (minimetro-train- bus) which was well worth the trip!

Hello,
Is that a true reflection of the danger of parking a car in Perugia?
Can we hire a taxi from our holiday place to and from Perugia, please? Who would you recommend?
Thank you,
Anne
