This is an Etruscan gate that has miraculously survived over the millennia. This is part of one of the few remaining walls of the Rocca Paolina. What we see today is the dismantled/saved arch that has been incorporated into the fortress’s stone walls. There are some remaining statues/carvings that can be seen atop the false terrace. This provides one (of several) entry/exit points into the Rocca Paolina.

Porta Marzia (Marzia Gate) was the main entrance to the southern end of the Etruscan city in the third century BC, in the 1540s when the Rocca Paolina was being constructed the gate was incorporated into the underground city. The gate is much smaller in size to the Arco Etrusco on the other side of the town. Today you can walk through the gate on your discovery of the Rocca.
