I have been to Italia 4x now for a total of 3+ months and Gubbio is the best.
The tour buses have not overwhelmed this medieval gem yet. Take your time. Walk all the streets and alleys-get lost even. The city is spotless and almost no ciggies which is a rarity here. Take the Busitalia bus from Perugia for about 11 euros. You will never forget Gubbio.

In Umbria region, there Is the medieval Little Town of Gubbio.

Honestly, we were only in Gubbio for something to do on a chilly day that threatened rain. We were glad we went. It is a beautiful town with the Piazza Grande as the show piece. Two pieces of information: 1. The town is very steep and there are free elevators to get you from level-to-level. 2. Bathrooms are public pay toilets and you need exact change. Save yourself the toilet hassle by stopping into a local pastry shop or bar for an espresso. The public toilet is .5 euro, an espresso is .9 and you get the use of a free, clean bathroom.

I'm so glad we visited here. After a magnificent, never-to-be-forgotten stay at Le Castello di Petroia (separate review), located midway between Gubbio and Perugia, after reading about this beautiful town, we knew we had to visit. The piazza is lovely for photo taking and offers a great view of the city from the terrace. This is a photographer's dream. There was a little train that passed through the square for tourists. We didn't bother taking it or going in to the museum here in the square. It was just nice to walk around and enjoy the views and the magnificent architecture.

Gubbio is easy to get to and well worth taking the time to do so if you are planning on going to Assisi and/or Perugia (both highly recommended). We also enjoyed a cable car ride in the "bird cage" - the Funivia here in Gubbio. Enjoy your time here and all that beautiful Umbria has to offer. Gubbio is beautiful - up there with Assisi and Spello for incredible history, architecture & Umbrian hill top views. A must place to visit when in this part of Italy.

The main square is lovely to walk through and make sure that you visit the fresco exhibitions when in the city.

A vast number of Giotto frescos are currently on display in three sites ( there are posters everywhere so they sites are easy to find).

Tip: Search our this lovely nearby place for lunch - la Locanda del Cantini. Delicious! and innovative food. Good with allergies and spoke some English .

Umbria is modest, like Tuscany but without the pomp. And if you travel around Umbria then you MUST visit Gubbio. It is modest and restrained but has enormous beauty and really amazes as you turn each corner. The people are open and friendly, prices are very reasonable and the city offers much more than the guides can tell you, just take time to walk around and take photos. And chat to the locals they all seem to enjoy a quick chat in English. Italy at its unpretentious best. Well worth several visits,as the surrounding coutryside makes driving a real pleasure.

What a magnificent piazza and palazzo overlooking the Umbrian hills. Have a drink in the square and take in the views and the laid -back atmosphere-it's worth the walk up to the top. An excellent time to visit is when they run the "TRE CERI" through the town where you will see a parade of silk wearing supporters of the TRE CERI from the town - the piazzo comes alive. Very busy and noisy but very exciting

Could wonder these streets for days and take photos and admire the view, lots and history and not too many tourist crowds shouting and marching about. Just beautiful.

I Went with family for a tour of Gubbio during Christmas Time and it was beautiful!! Nice athmosphere through city streets with all kind of lights and characteristic festooned shops. Also, the huge christmas tree on side of mountain was spectacular. five stars.

When you take your first trip around Gubbio this is the place to start. Tip 1 rather than climb it take the lift up and walk down. Tip 2 from the Piazza take the Gubbio Express for a trip around the town. This gives you the ideal opportunity to get a trip round the whole town get your bearings and saves wondering around aimlessly trying to find places of interest. Once you have done the tour it is much easier to find your way back to the places you want to see again in more detail. It is 8 euros pp well spent. Tip 3 many of the shops around the Piazza itself are for the tourist with all selling more or less the same things for similar prices, a bit like Blackpool et al. After you have taken in the stunning views take a leisurely stroll back down the hill where there are a number of shops and cafes worth visiting. Tip 4 if you like ice cream then don't miss the one on the right hand almost at the bottom of the hill. Don't worry if you can't make up your mind from the choices on display the owner will let you sample them before you decide. Then sit outside and watch the world go by and enjoy the ice cream!
