The Palace, located in the historic center, was built in the 12th century and represents one of the best structures that have survived to us. Inside there is also a small museum.

To describe Gubbio in a few words is impossible. Since the time of Rome, Gubbio was an important cultural center, civic virtues and art. Since the end of the wretched Western Empire, the pride and moral strength of the Eugubini marked a path of strength, courage and Fatherland Love. In the medieval centuries it counted among those who lived in the shelter of its mighty walls, figures such as San Francesco, Sant’Ubaldo, Montefeltro, Della Rovere, Spadalonga and countless patriots and citizens. Proud and indomitable, Gubbio was able to resist sieges and occupations, giving Umbria and Italy a superb example of courage and struggle: not least during the Teutonic occupation during the Second World War. There are countless works of art and monuments that insist on the town and that I can try to list: the Duomo, the Church of San Francesco, the Cathedral, the various millennial Churches among which stands out that of Santa Maria della Vittorina and that deserve a careful and painstaking description: go and visit them because they deserve it. Another long list would be that of the important civil monuments: Palazzo Pretorio, Consoli, Ducale, Capitano del Popolo, that of Bargello: they too, each of them, deserves a careful visit for what is displayed there. Know that the movements within the city are FREE as the Municipal Administration makes available to citizens and guests a shuttle that runs, practically, the entire city with stops, in fact, in the immediate vicinity of the many monuments of different eras. I like to give a heartfelt applause to the drivers of this Shuttle who have shown immense patience in carrying out the itineraries by masterfully overcoming and, sometimes, authentic acrobatics the vehicles abandoned in park by characters of arduous definition... To tell the truth I would have many terms to connote these uncivilized but I can not afford it here, understand me. I would add that in Piazza Grande, part of the environments where the exteriors of the television drama “DON_MATTEO” were filmed insist and, also, in Piazza Grande there is the bar where Marshal Cecchini (Nino Frassica) and Don Matteo (Terence Hill) met, which is inserted in the Hotel Relais Ducale: right where the drama was filmed, there is the table where Don Matteo and Marshal Cecchini faced each other in their memorable games of checkers and where the chessboard, the Marshal’s cap and Don Matteo’s beret insist with, in addition, a third chair for any guests of Gubbio. From the center of Gubbio starts the cable car that, in a few minutes of travel, leads to the Monte Eletto where the Basilica of Sant’Ubaldo insists and where the 3 candles used in the Feast of the Candles of May are preserved. In the immediate vicinity of Gubbio, reachable with a relaxing walk, there are several historic castles and the famous Valle del Bottaccione where you can even touch the Platinum-Iridium layer dating back to the era of the disappearance of the Dinosaurs. Also in Gubbio, hidden in one of the ancient historic buildings overlooking Piazza Grande, you can enter a perfectly preserved medieval secret path that connected this palace with that of the Lords of Gubbio: it is inside the Hotel Relais Ducale. Going to visit Gubbio means taking a dip in history.
