The primary reason to visit the 13th century church of Sant' Agostino is for its frescos of the life of St. Augustine and the Last Judgement by Gubbio's most famous artist, Ottaviano Nelli. The church makes for a nice stop when combined with a visit to the nearby Porta Romana, the sole survivor of the six 13th century towers that once guarded the entrances into the city. The tower/gate now houses a museum of beautiful antique Umbrian ceramics, including 3 rare majolica plates produced by Gubbio's Maestro Giorgio in the early 16th century. The streets surrounding Sant'Agostino and the Porta Romana are very picturesque and have some good local restaurants.

As we visited the church there was a party going next door. The dance music and the noisy youth disturbed for a bit our visit.
But the church is worth visiting. An altar with a large hanging cross is taking your attention. But there's more to discover on and in the walls on the left side and right side.

Built circa 1250, the church has a single nave with the roof being supported by 8 impressive Gothic arches on the inside augmented by circular buttresses on the outside. There are several works of art to admire, but pride of place has to go to the late-Gothic frescoes by Ottaviano Nelli, the most impressive of which depicts episodes from the life of St Augustine.

I note some previous reviewers complain that the frescoes aren't particularly well-preserved. Speaking as someone with absolutely no expertise in such matters - I thought that they were very impressive and well worth seeing.

This is the creation of the local painter, Ottaviano Nelli and his workshop and it gives a charming glimpse into life in the early fifteenth century. However, it is not in the best state of repair and even has a set of wooden choir stalls cutting off the lower portion of some key scenes. My lasting impression of Medieval and Renaissance art in Gubbio is that it seems strangely damaged, inadequately restored and just not as good as that in comparable Italian towns. I did enjoy these frescoes, though, and am glad to have seen them.

This modest church next to the Porta Romana has a few not well preserved frescoes. At the north side though, you will see a beautiful organ case!

The church Sant'Agostino is absolutely an attraction to add on the top list attractions of the city, located far enough away from the center and tourist hub, near the Roman gate. Obviously the highlights of this wonderful church are beautiful paintings and absolutely unmissable.
