The legend says that if a man makes three laps around the fountain, he becomes mad. My little kid loved the legend. It is in one of the most picturesque places of Gubbio and it is a nice place to keep the children busy with a nice legend.

Nice little square with an old fountain. Some ceramic shops nearby. On the way to S.Domenico church.

This fountain has a legend of going around it 3 times and you buy a certificate to say you are now a madman from Gubbio. It is called the fountain of the madmen. One of us did it and you have to pay 3euro in the shop next door. Just a fun thing to do. As for the fountain it is just a 16th century fountain in the Palazzo del Bargello.

Take the opportunity to take part in the local custom of running around this fountain 3 times – you are then declared a citizen of Gubbio and officially mad! Unfortunately the adjoining Bargello Palace was never open while we were there so we couldn't collect our certificate. It's also fun to watch the kids run round the fountain.

The tradition is to circle the fountain three times and then splash the fountain's water on your face. Then you'll become an "motto onorario" (honorary madman) of Gubbio. Harmless fun, and make a video to show your friends back home.

The strange tradition of Gubbio is just this: to run three laps around the fountain (preferably a local must be present), and then to be bathed with the water of the fountain itself. At that point it is possible to receive the "crazy license" (but if you want to do it before, you can buy it in one of the small stores present on the square). The origins of this tradition are many, although the most accredited is that it is a ritual ( since 1880) performed during a local festival: people make fast laps around the flagpole in Piazza Grande. Curious is the fact that some studies are investigating the fact that the whole area has been, in the past, contaminated with Iridium, a toxic substance that would explain the madness of colors who have come into contact with it!

The fountain dates back to the 1500s and is in front of the Palazzo del Bargello just down from the main square. Worth a look if you're passing.

This small square is located outside the Palazzo del Bargello in the heart of Gubbios old town. It has a nice fountain here and a comfortable old town feel.

Much has already been said about the myths, legends and fun surrounding this fountain, so I don't need to add anything to that. Let me simply say therefore, that what I liked about this fountain was that it was made from a major piece of stone and, situated as it is in an old square, feels that it has been here forever. Truly an integral part of Gubbio and its social history.

By all means have a bit of fun circumnavigating it three times, but spare some time to think about the generations of locals who have simply used it as a fountain.

If passing by stop for a photo and take a breather. I'd let the kids run around it and go mad on their own!
