Mauro has moved
Sep 2017
After reading the reviews of Mauro's leather goods on here I made a special trip to Assisi to find him, only to find his shop is no longer there. Luckily someone in a nearby shop was able to tell me he has moved and now has a shop in the Grand Hotel Assisi. It is on the outskirts of town almost in a residential area. He is there in his shop which is also where his workshop now is, but he is only open 6.30-10.00 am and 5.30pm until about 8 or 9pm I think. Well worth a visit - I bought two beautiful bags - excellent quality leather and not expensive. A mystery as to why he is now based there as he no longer has the passing trade and he is no longer easy to find but well worth it!

Quality goods for years to come
Jul 2015 • Friends
I stopped in here with my choir on a day trip to Assisi and this was one of the highlights to an already incredible area. Our director knows Mauro and he was kind and friendly - offering us discounts and chatting with us for awhile.

Many of us got cross-over bags that were made of beautiful leather with a suede interior. I've had my bag for almost 6 years now (I visited in 2011) and despite heavy use and the reckless care of a college student, the leather is in great condition! His goods are a great investment and it's always better to support local craftsmen over the designer boutiques in Rome, etc.

Should've bought 2!
Aug 2015 • Family
I visited this shop in August and bought a gorgeous bag. I've worn it almost daily for 5 mos and it still looks amazing. I get a lot of compliments on it.
I thought I'd come across a lot of these handmade leather shops on my travels in Italy, but sadly there weren't that many quality shops. Had I known how special a place it was I would've walked away with a couple of more things.

I visited Mauro's shop and purchased several leather products as gifts for family back home. I purchased a purse and wallet for my self which i use daily. Unfortunately the wallet i bought was found by my puppy. I would love to get a replacement. I believe Mauro does not have a website for shopping so if anyone is planning a trip to Assisi soon let me know so you can pick up a new one for me. thanks.

Beautiful Umbria Leather Store
May 2015 • Friends
I could kick myself that I did not purchase a purse from Il Tapiro. Sadly, Mauro does not have a website from which I could place an order now that I am back home. He was in his shop stitching a backpack when I visited his shop. Very personable young man with a passion and artful skill for leather purses, backpacks, briefcases, etc. I woefully regret not taking the time to purchase a beautiful leather purse.

Handmade Leather Goods of First Quality
May 2015 • Couples
A newsletter I subscribe to, written by Italians, recommended this place. Mauro and his wife are proud of their leather goods, as well they should be. I had just returned from Florence and found the quality and prices here, not to mention style, better than the big city. I ended up buying a red leather shoulder bag and a pair of sandals for my daughter.
It is steps from the Basilica and not to be missed.

Beautiful, handmade leather goods near the Basilica of St. Francis
Apr 2014 • Business
If you aren't looking for Mauro Cenci's leather shop, you'll probably walk right past it on your way to the Basilica of St. Francis. My students and I stopped by on the recommendation of a colleague, and almost every one of us left with a treasure! Mauro's little hole-in-the-wall shop is chock-full of handmade leather goods—sandals, wallets, purses, etc.—but what interested my students the most were the custom-made book covers. Give Mauro the dimensions of one of your favorite books (in our case, Bibles and prayerbooks), and in a day or so he'll craft a custom-fitted leather cover, decorated however you'd like. (Be sure to give him the dimensions in centimeters!) Most items in the store are a bit pricey, but these one-of-a-kind, handmade leather goods are worth every penny. Be aware that Mauro doesn't speak much English, but if someone in your group knows conversational Italian or Spanish, you can place a custom order and walk away with a lifelong friend!
