If Assisi were more about:
sites such as where Frances grew up and transitioned,
the simple church that honors his precise birthplace,
the tiny cell in which he was contained by a mercenary father,
If the overblown churches and basilicas and sideshow atmosphere of his burial site were promulgated to be more reflective of his values and teachings than the vast egos that inspire panini joints,inuate such Goliaths upon both him and a susceptible public,
If the "holy" shops, restaurants, gelaterias, etc. ad. inf. could somehow have fallen in step behind a simple man with small messages about the earth. its creatures, their maker and our relationships one to another,
Then Assisi, as a place to visit, might - just might - have had a chance to be something of considerably more substantial spiritual than mercenary value.
But it didn't, and it isn't.

This birthplace of St. Francis was once a stable, housing oxen and donkeys. It is one of the most beloved places in Assisi. The Oratorio has been documented from 1286. A Romanesque arch into which is placed a gothic entry portal dominates the façade. Upon entry into this place of worship, it is very Spartan, with a raised altar, benches that line the walls and 13th century frescos above the altar.
This is necessary visit for anyone on a Saint Francis pilgrimage.

Arriving here after seeing all the big churches and huge groups of tourists is a delight and a very spiritual experience.
PLEASE, please do not take photos inside. Breathe deeply and save it to memory. This is a truly beautiful love filled place.
Sit a while after the whole hectic Assisi experience. You will be touched.

This must stop on the St. Francis pilgrimage is located a short distance from Chiesa Nuova. According to legend, it was in this former stable that St. Francis’ mother found refuge to give birth. It was transformed into an oratory in the late 13th century. Above the pointed arch entry, the inscription states this as fact. Above the altar are traces of 14th century frescos.

This small, quite modest church well befits the life that was to be for Francis. The site is the bottom floor or working area of what would have been the family home. It takes just moments to see the entirety, maybe a few more in contemplation, but I highly recommend seeing it prior to going to Chiesa Nuova.
