Beautiful old historic Catholic church

Beautiful details of workmanship that was done several hundred years ago is something that`s hard to believe that it was done so long ago.

To get to the upper church, one must climb some 40 steep steps, and leave the same way, along with lots of other people. Worth it tho. To get a free tour, download Rick Steves audio Europe and his tour of the basilica. He also has a walking tour of Assisi we greatly enjoyed. This building is the reason people... More

The church is full of great art. The tomb of St.Francis is a holy place for all Christians, no matter the dogma.

This Basilica is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Order of Friars Minor Conventual in Assisi. Assisi is located in Umbria, a region in central Italy. Saint Francis lived and died here. Saint Clare also lived in Assisi. Lots to see. Shopping can be found throughout the grounds. Stop at the bakery and buy your favorite dolce. You'll find... More

Great fresco's, loving Basillica up on hill down from the old town. No pictures allowed inside. Worth a visit just for the frescos by Giotto and others, at the lower and upper church.

Our family visited the lower church for the 11:00 am Mass during the week. Although none of us understand Italian, it was still a wonderful, familiar experience. Later in the day, we returned and took the self-guided tour using the headphones. We explored the lower church and the upper church. It is difficult to capture in words the beauty and... More

We have previously visited the Basilica in the summer months so to come in the spring was a real treat: throughout the day (and we visited at least once a day over several days) it was so much quieter than we had previously experienced. Without the crowds, with the sad inevitability of flash photography and noisy talk, it was much... More

Definitely get an audio guide it will tell you all about it. Not too long-winded until you get upstairs but even then I found it worth listening to to hear the story of St Francis.

We toured the Basilica with an experienced tour guide, Marco, who brought the story of the Basilica and St Francis to life. An absolute must to visit
