Assisi is a must see place at least once in a lifetime, and the Basilica is the greatest point! The "energy" of this place is wonderful, besides the beauty of the town! The Basilica, at the tomb, is where San Francesco is buried, with four of his closest followers. You will see two churches, one on the top of the... More

Not a lot to do in Assisi but it is a very spiritual place and this is one of the stops you should have on your pilgrimage given its significance.

This was the most beautiful I have seen in Italy, and I have been to Rome and Napoli. The basilica is very beautiful, Gothic and frescoes on all walls. Get the audio guide to tell you about the frescoes especially to learn St Francis' story.

We did not do a guided tour but just followed Lonely Planet's suggestions. It worked really well. In the Basilica we viewed many frescoes and wonderful works of art. The tomb of St. Francis was very interesting. There were people there who had made a pilgrimage especially for a mass there. The upper church walls are covered with frescoes that... More

Such a spiritual place. Visiting the tomb of St Francis was very memorable. The respect and silence of the visitors was memorable. We were also fortunate to be there on Ash Wednesday and received ashes at mass.

We spent the night in Assisi and attended Mass in the Cathedral. It was extraordinary, as was the multiple opportunities we had to visit the tomb of St. Francis.

A most peaceful place, when it is not crowded, which is hardly ever. The basilica is one of the most important places of Christian pilgrimage in Italy, and as such, frequently holds meetings of pilgrims, and other events of a religious nature. Photography is not allowed inside, so visit the gift shop and purchase a postcard view. Along with the... More

Assisi is a respite from the loud and hectic large cities of Italy. And the jewel of Assisi is this magnificent Basilica with its world acclaimed frescoes in the upper church and the tomb of St.Francis in the lower church it is worthy of the trip to this hilltop town.
