St Francis is entombed in this church so many faithful...perhaps more accurately pilgrims come here to pray. It worked out we that were here on Sunday, and went to mass in the Basilica. None of us understand Italian, but we could follow the flow of the mass and it was a special place to receive communion. The people visiting the... More

This was one of the planned places to visit on our trip and it didn't disappoint. Wonderful centuries old paintings. Compelling reliquary. Staff and monks very helpful. If you're anywhere near here, you must go.

The place to start your tour of Assisi. It's where he is buried and the feeling of his compassion surrounds you.

I have traveled quite a bit in Italy for the past 18 months or so and by far Assisi is the most beautiful city I have been to. The Basilica Papale San Francesco D'Assisi is beautiful with its two levels. Off the lower level you can visit the tomb of St. Francis. The only downside is that you are not... More

This church is really a special place. So pretty. We had a guide so we were able to hear the all about the history, architecture and art as well. There is a security area to go through, so backpacks get searched. No photos inside. Cover knees and shoulders before going in. It was very interesting to hear all about the... More

We were staying for a few days in Perugia & took the short train trip to Assisi. It was well worth doing. A beautiful town (UNESCO world heritage) on a hill; very impressive as one approaches. Yes, one of the highlights is to visit the basilica. Even though we had to queue a little for security check, it was still... More

I'm not a huge Church visitor. Neither privately or as a Tourist. But this is very very special Church. Independently if you practise a catholism or any other version of christianity or not this is still Worth a detour just for the architecture and the artwork. Remember to pay respect and wear something which covers knees and shoulders.

This is genuinely one of the most special places I have ever been to. Despite the huge numbers of visitors, the basilica is breath takingly beautiful, with incredible detail of mural and decoration over every surface of a beautifully designed architectural cathedral. The tomb of St Francis himself is humbling, and simply to have the opportunity to sit and pray... More

This church is more than 850!! years old. Amazing interior, frescos by Giotto and Cimabue and others. Basilica is a beautiful monument to St. Francis and is deeply revered by Catholics. A must see in Assisi. Bag checks and proper dress code (no shorts, short skirts or open shoulders). Assisi by itself is a charming town.
