If I am not mistaken, this was the place where St Francis was buried. The basilica is divided into two parts, and the al fresco were painted by great Italian artists. It is also so educational because it gives you a brief history of Francesco's vocation. Visit St Francis' burial place - it gives you a sense of peace and... More

The Basilica was an excellent experience and well worth a visit. We walked from the opposite end of Assisi and the walk took approximately 25 minutes at a leisurely pace in the heat. The views over Umbria as you arrive outside the Basilica are phenomenal, but I digress. The Basilica is split into the Upper and Lower sections. In the... More

Assisi is a beautiful albeit touristy city due to its religious nature. The basilica is no doubt impressive both architecturally and from an art point of view. It houses the most significant frescoes of Giotto. The city is busy but pleasant to walk through because it is pedestrianized throughout, giving you plenty of opportunity to peruse its streets, the shops,... More

Take a full day to enjoy this place! Sit and meditate. Enjoy the tranquil environment. Take a million pictures. If I was an artist I would live there and paint all day! The weather was great in October, crisp!

The Basilica Papele San Francesco D'Assissi is amazing. In the interior we can find the San Francesco's tomb, the enviroment near the tomb is very peaceful. In the above floor we saw the churchs , all of them with a decoration not very rich but with something to tell. The main church in the upper floor have amazing paints in... More

A must see for anyone, not just Catholics. The view from there is amazing. Check out the sculpture above out in front of the cathedral by Norberto. Awesome.

I was really surprised by the fact that there are 2 churches (one above other). Thought I was going to see a really simple Basilica, but it was very coulourfull and very beautifull. The place where San Francesco is under both churches and it is very simple and very special for who goes there for religious reasons (as I did).

Not much to add - one comes to Assisi to see this and the town in itself - one has to be ready to queue up, but it's worth the wait - the frescoes are beautiful - my only comment would be that as in other places of high worship (Lourdes, Czestochowa, Lisieux) the balance between true spirituality and..."the business... Firstly be prepared for the security check which is an unfortunate part of today's environment. When you do visit allow yourself at least an hour to appreciate the history and beauty of this building. It is a beautiful place to pray. Don't forget to visit Santa Maria Degli Angeli to fully appreciate the history of Assisi and St. Francis.
