Assisi is a beautiful town and this church is perfect. Well maintained and tranquil. Well worth a visit.

It is an impressive site worth stopping on the way to Assisi. It has small and old chapel in the center of the church which is quite unusual. Then continue the small regional road to Assisi to get an overview of the Assisi from below.

The main attraction of this place is definitely the chapel of the Porziuncola which is housed inside this big church which, to me lacks character. However the chapel is a shrine and the friars make sure that the magnificence of the basilica does not spoil...More

Fascinating chapel within a church with such history. An unexpected find and well worth visiting before you get on the train to leave Assisi.

Inside is one big surprise. Worth seeing, stopping and thinking of life o Saint Francis. White pigeons near his monument, smell of roses near garden. Everything is unbelievable.

What a wonderful little church inside the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli. It is inspiring to see how simple St. Francis was compared to the luxury surrounding it today.

It would be easy to overlook the Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli if you only spend time up on the hill in Assisi where the Basilicas of St. Francis and St. Claire are located. But Santa Maria is special and of course ties into...More

At the very center of the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli is a small chapel which marks the foundation of the Franciscan (Porziuncula) order. A must see! Also, there are other sites attached to the church which are significant in Francis' life. A bonus...More

No photos are allowed within the Basilica or the Portiuncula. However, that does not preclude those with no respect of the wishes of the order from taking photos anyway. This little church of the portiuncula rests in the center of the Basilica, its façade adorned...More

Given the fact that it's even walkable from the town of Assisi, I guess walking down from the train station should absolutely be doable, as it's like a 1/3rd of the distance and it's flat. If you want to walk from st. Maria... More
