The basilica has the original San Damiano cross, the Byzantine cross that played a major role in Francesco's calling. This is a place where you can sit down and pray. If you are not religious, it is a place where you can just sit down and clear your mind! The basilica is where the body of Santa Chiara is entombed.

St Claire is the other half of the franciscan heritage and this basilica which holds her mortal remains and relics is the other must see in Assisi - the building in itself is beautiful, in some ways maybe more so than other in Assisi. It has been beautifully restored inside and St Claire's relics are as moving as those of... More

Here, you relish the relics of St Clare, visit her crpyt and see on display some relics. You also see the Cross from which Christ spoke to St Francis (kept in the main side chapel). The views of the Assisi countryside from the front of this church are spectacular. There is a fount with drinkable water beside the church. The... More

Beautiful church ,well preserved , nice relaxing environment and in the basement there is a small museum with clothing and her hair which she cut in order to devote them to God. A nice square outside the church with great view of Umbria . Photos are not permitted inside

This is the "second" church of Assisi, the Church of St. Clare. The exterior, with its simple ranges of soft white and pink stone, seemed both warm and austere to me. The interior included rich decorative elements, including clear references to the Virgin in the crypt where St. Clare is buried. I am not religious, but as other reviewers have... More

The church is dedicated to St. Clare a follower, probably the most famous follower, of St Francis. It is very peaceful and a great place to sit and be reflective. The square outside can be pleasant to sit in if it is not a hot summer day and there are several quick food/ snack restaurants (Italian-style) literally within sight of the... More

We came to Assiss mainly for St Francesco, but in many ways I preferred St Chiara. This is a very peacful, spiritual place with plenty of interesting features and marvellous artwork for non-believers just to appreciate.

A beautiful, peaceful church. We meditated here. The feeling is very strong that St. Clare holds your heart so you feel God's love.

The architecture of this church is beautiful. Unfortunately I didn't have the chance to go inside the day I visited due to an event happening there.

Pilgrims will love it but tourists who just appreciate a good church or mosque would be better off down the hill with St Francis, especially the lower basilica which is far more impressive.
