About
SAIO is the Vineyard of Assisi: 45 acres of vineyards and olive trees just 800 m from the Church of Saint Francis, UNESCO World Heritage Site. In our family farm we make small production wines which are the result of our passion and the best expression of our territory. Have fun with Pic nic and Trekking in the vineyards, Apprentice Wine courses, lunch and wine tastings and much more. We'll taste together white and red wines paired with the best local specialties.

We had a lovely time here. We booked the deluxe picnic. The visit started with a 15 minute brief about the winery and how the picnic works. With the deluxe package you choose your picnic bottle (based on the description of all wines). Then you cross the road to stroll the vineyards. You are on your own and you just walk the path following the printed map, tasting grapes and reading the basic informations about the grapes and descriptions about every kind grown there. At some point you can see some goats if you wish. They were cute. Everything took 45 minutes for us. When you reach the veranda, you are immediately stunned by the view of Assisi. It’s always gorgeous from any point of view, but there, above the vineyards, it’s especially beautiful. Our host arrived in the car at the agreed time and brought us and one other couple our picnic baskets. The food was really delicious and fresh. Excellent porchetta and everything else. We really liked the grape jam which we purchased after along with another bottle of wine (a different kind to try at home). Prices are very reasonable. I always prefer a family run business because they make it more personal and welcoming for you and the food is always superb to accompany your wine. SAIO is a good example of that. We enjoyed our picnic very much and I recommend this experience for couples and friends.

My wife and I visited SAIO's wine shop in late March as the last stop on a wonderful day of touring wineries near Perugia and Assisi. By the time we were ready to visit SAIO, the sun was getting ready to set, so our very capable and helpful tour guide, Elena Buzzini, called ahead to SAIO, and Agnese from SAIO was kind enough to come back to the SAIO sales shop after the normal closing time to open the shop back up for our visit.

SAIO's wine shop is a beautifully designed interior renovation of an older roadside building, and Agnese is a wonderful host -- gracious, friendly, and informative.

We found SAIO's approach to winemaking to be an interesting contrast to that of other area wineries. Although Sagrantino is the top red-wine grape in that part of Umbria, SAIO's red wines are built around other types of red-wine grapes, including Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. Grechetto is one of the top white-wines grapes in that part of Umbria, and SAIO makes a pure Grechetto, but SAIO also makes white wines using Chardonnay and Viognier.

We tasted several of their wines and found them to be very successful. We wound up buying three bottles -- a Chardonnay-Viognier blend named Colle Asio, a Cabernet Franc-Sangiovese blend named Eremo, and a Merlot-Sangiovese blend. We had the three bottles shipped to our address in the United States, and they arrived in perfect condition. They are now resting for a while to eliminate any bottle shock they may have experienced in transport. We look forward to enjoying them starting a month or two from now.

After a day of tasting wonderful Sagrantinos at other wineries in the area, SAIO's wines were a delightful change of pace. We were impressed by their willingness to grow and make wines from a variety of grapes other than Sagrantino, and to blend them into combinations we had not previously seen.

Our only mistake was buying only three bottles -- we should have bought more. But when we finish them, we're confident that Agnese will help us get more. And the next time we're in the vicinity of Perugia or Assisi, we look forward to visiting SAIO again. If you're planning a visit to that part of Umbria, my wife and I strongly recommend that you drop by SAIO for a visit.

We visited in June 2011 and had a lovely time learning about the wines and the area from the family's daughter, Agnese. She did a superb job describing their wines and her enthusiasm was infectious. The wines were all delicious and we ended up buying a mixed case to ship back to the states - sangiovese, sangiovese + merlot, and grecchetto - loved them all and really liked that it still has that small family vineyard feel. They have several other blends as well but we chose to stay with wines more typical of the region and with less international grapes mixed in. My only regret is that I forgot to have her throw in a couple bottles of their excellent olive oil as well, may have to write them to rectify that! The tasting room is beautiful inside though outside it is on the main drag rather than up near the main vineyards which is kind of a shame though clearly easier to locate - but I may have stayed all day tasting if I could have looked out at the vines and Assisi while sipping, just gorgeous!

Agnese - Thank you for an absolutely WONDERFUL time today at your shop. All the food we tasted from the Umbria region wsa perfect. And the dishes your mother made were just wonderful. She even got my picky eater of a husband to eat and totally enjoy lentils.

If you are even considering passing through the Umbria region or if you are going to Assisi, this place is a must. Do the wine and food pairing tasting.

Thank you again. The Cohen Family

What a magnificent place this winery is. Now Australia have some great wineries but this gorgeous family run winery was amazing. Agnesia (not sure if correct spelling) was fabulous and its a joy for someone to share their love of wines as well as their job. This is a must see (and taste) place. I went with a wonderful young couple who live nearby who were very proud to show me their favourite winery. The wines were magnificent and the special wine and chocolate tasting was brilliant - who knew you could match wines with chocolate! She proved it can and should be done. I am absolutely convinced. Every person travelling to this region should go to SAIO. If you are not travelling to Assisi, you should! I found Umbria to be way better than Tuscany. A real Italian secret!

The experience at the family-run Saio vineyard/winery was superb! We had arranged for the Vine to Glass tour, and we are thrilled we did so! We are a couple with three college-aged children who accompanied us to Italy. We also happen to be in production agriculture in the US, so we're not unfamiliar with the intricacies of this type of business.

To say that the Agnese (who is also fluent in English and German) is a knowledgeable hostess is an understatement. She is the daughter of the owner of the vineyard, and is not only very informative, but absolutely delightful! We adored her sense of humor and her all encompassing tour was more than we could have anticipated. She described, in detail, all of the pertinent information of the growing process, as well as describing her role in the marketing of the SAIO wines to other countries. She is a natural teacher, and her information was fascinating!

She spent a great deal of time with us - answering every single question - and served us SAIO's outstanding wine and accompaniments at the end of the session.

We highly recommend the tour - and the wines - to anyone visiting the Umbrian region! We loved every minute of our time with Agnese and the vineyard/winery! It was not only a highlight of the Umbrian region, but truly, one of the highlights of our trip to Italy!

We combined our trip to SAIO with a visit of Assisi, the shop is 5 minutes away from the historical center.
Agnese (one of the daughters) was our hostess during the visit, because of the bad weather she prepared an alternative program in the wine shop (very modern) for us . During the tasting of their wines in combination of some local products she explained the history of the vineyard (very young) and an explanation about of their products, the grapes they are using, the production process. We got a small tour in the vineyard (by car), seen the “Grechetto” vine yard and got a magnificent view on Assisi.
Agneses guides you in fluent English we had a great time and when we are in the neighborhood we certainly go back to get a visit through the vineyards.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the SAIO Wine Shop. We loved the "From the Vine to the Glass" tour of the vineyard with our welcoming guide and member of the family that owns the shop and vineyard, Agnese. She provided great information and descriptions of the grape growing and wine making processes. The vineyards sits about a kilometer from the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi. The views of the city of Assisi were spectacular amidst the grape vines! Once the tour ended, we were treated to a wine tasting back at the shop. The SAIO wines are wonderful! Thanks so much to Agnese and the SAIO Wine Shop for making our visit to Assisi so wonderful!

My husband and I were at SAIO (sah-yoh) last week for the "Flavors of Umbria" experience. We both loved it! Agnese was very welcoming and accommodating.

My husband loved the SAIO reds, especially the Eremo. I'm not much of a wine drinker, but I finished my Grechetto. It's fresh, light, and smooth. It reminds me of Vino Verde from Portugal.

The food, as expected, was delicious. Agnese informed us that they are locally sourced, and are not usually found in supermarkets. The lentil soup was good. Now, I know what to do with the bag of lentils in my pantry- lentil soup, Umbrian style!

After the tasting, we took a walk in the vineyard heading to the veranda that offers a view of the medieval town. Absolutely beautiful!

I am so glad I booked the experience for me and my husband. We love the flavors of Umbria!
