A nice place for a relaxing walk inside the open space of the fort. There is a school of music called Siena Jazz.In the summer you can watch outdoor cinema there. It is free to get in.

The Fortezza is a huge red bricked fortress with good views of Siena and the surrounding countryside. You can walk around the walls.
On Wednesday mornings the local market takes place in the streets surrounding the fortress.
When we were there in May/June a funfair was set up inside the fortress, which seemed a bit odd!

This fort was built in the 1560's on the place of a previous citadel built by the Spanish in 1548 and subsequently destroyed by the Sienese. The fort was built following the final defeat of Siena by Florence more as a preventative attempt to stop the Sienese reestablishing their independence. In 1937 it was turned into a public park. It did not witness a battle.

The fort is rectangular in shape with a very high and imposing outer perimeter built entirely of bricks with four huge bastions at the corners with at least one of which we saw displaying the Medici coat of arms. The walls are very wide and are now topped with broad walking paths lined with trees. There were a number of people walking and running along the paths when we visited. There are also some benches and good views of the city to be had from some viewing points. The only entrance faces the Giardini della Lizza which also faces towards Florence.

When we were first in Siena in 2008 the interior of the fort looked to be very disused but on this visit there appeared to be a food/wine festival being held inside. There is certainly no museums or historical displays.

The large market held in Siena on Wednesdays is held outside of the walls closest to the city and the Giardini della Lizza. The markets are very large and worth a look (mostly clothes, footwear, household goods etc with a small food section). If visiting the markets have a look at the fort, otherwise, not a must see.

During our visit we had one overcast day with showers throughout. We didn't let this dampen or spirits and decided to instead have a walk a little further out as we had noticed this when we were at our pick up place the day before to go on a trip. It's not too far from the centre and a nice walk around the top with great views towards the city. It is a huge structure and and different notice boards with information in both Italian and English so we learnt a bit of the history too. We didn't spend too long, but walked along the walls and enjoyed the views. The path way is even and flat so easy for those who need access for pushchairs etc. They also have a huge outdoor market outside of it on a Wednesday as we noticed as we were getting a bus from Siena Tozzi a few days later so waked through some and had a look. Lots of clothes, bedding, fruit, fits etc.

This is a bit of walk from central Siena but well worth it. Strangely this place doesn't get many tourists but it is popular with locals out for a walk or jog. The views of Siena and the surrounding countryside from the walls of this fortress are spectacular. There is no charge and the jazz school provides lovely music that you can listen too while sitting on one of the benches soaking up the late autumn sunshine. Avoid Enotecca Italiana though - the wine is too expensive!

For some reason that I have not researched this is also known as Fortezza Medici; it is located at the top end of the walled city just beyond the main bus stop. There is one main brick built building used by a jazz school so on our visit we enjoyed the music practice and there were even a couple of musicians playing their instruments outside during a break from work.

There are very thick walls and you can walk around them in relative peace as this is off the main tourist trail. You can rest under the trees and also enjoy a selection of excellent views of the city and the surrounding countryside.

On Wednesday mornings a clothing market takes place outside the walls and this is very busy with locals and tourists.

During the summer on fine evenings there is an open air cinema.

A lovely quiet and central spot where the locals go for their morning walk/run. It has great views, but there's a lack of historical information about the fort. Certainly worth a visit if you're in the area.

It’s hard to miss the fortress because it anchors one end of the town. There is a nice little park there where children can play and you can sit in the greenery. To me the most interesting part is in the Cantina where there are glass floors and you can see the Roman and Ettuscan ruins underneath for collecting water. There is also an oven. There is NO INFORMATION WRITTEN ANYWHERE about these but the woman at the tourist office explained it to me. They are definitely worth a look.

We stumbled upon the Fortezza by luck as we had parked our car nearby and intended to walk towards the city center. It is well worth it to carve a little time for a stroll around this masterpiece of a fort. It has absolutely stood the test of the time and the views from every corner of Siena are stunning.

When visiting a fort there is an expectation of the history surrounding it.
Apart from a brief metal plaque on entry there is very little here, yes, views over the city, rampart walks and, not a lot else.
If time is short give it a miss
