nice walk with great views
Jun 2021
the Fortress of Santa Barbara lays a bit off the historic center, but it is a popular place for locals to stroll around on the walls of the Fortezza and for great views on the city from one of the little bars.

A pleasant walk
Feb 2020
A nice place to have a walk around, with decent views of Siena from certain points. Plenty of people exercising. Felt like we were at a park rather than a Fort though.

Especially interesting inside
Oct 2019 • Solo
It’s hard to miss the fortress because it anchors one end of the town. There is a nice little park there where children can play and you can sit in the greenery. To me the most interesting part is in the Cantina where there are glass floors and you can see the Roman and Ettuscan ruins underneath for collecting water. There is also an oven. There is NO INFORMATION WRITTEN ANYWHERE about these but the woman at the tourist office explained it to me. They are definitely worth a look.

Also known as Fortezza Medicea. 16th century fort that is now a public park. Good views but not a lot else to see.
Jul 2019
This fort was built in the 1560's on the place of a previous citadel built by the Spanish in 1548 and subsequently destroyed by the Sienese. The fort was built following the final defeat of Siena by Florence more as a preventative attempt to stop the Sienese reestablishing their independence. In 1937 it was turned into a public park. It did not witness a battle.

The fort is rectangular in shape with a very high and imposing outer perimeter built entirely of bricks with four huge bastions at the corners with at least one of which we saw displaying the Medici coat of arms. The walls are very wide and are now topped with broad walking paths lined with trees. There were a number of people walking and running along the paths when we visited. There are also some benches and good views of the city to be had from some viewing points. The only entrance faces the Giardini della Lizza which also faces towards Florence.

When we were first in Siena in 2008 the interior of the fort looked to be very disused but on this visit there appeared to be a food/wine festival being held inside. There is certainly no museums or historical displays.

The large market held in Siena on Wednesdays is held outside of the walls closest to the city and the Giardini della Lizza. The markets are very large and worth a look (mostly clothes, footwear, household goods etc with a small food section). If visiting the markets have a look at the fort, otherwise, not a must see.

Nature break!
May 2019 • Solo
I found this under reviewed! It’s a location with history, a forte, you can hear all different kinds of birds, trees tussling in the wind, people exercising, and all enjoying without chaos.. a gift..
truly a place to walk romantically, enjoy nature, exercise, and/or have your own thoughts and all at an historical site! Just stop your feet for a moment.. and your mind will follow.. and then you will feel.

The fort offers very nice views of different parts of the city. Has a nice selection of exercise equipment. Offers a pleasant walk around the fort with lots of benches for sitting and relaxing. Well worth a visit.

Fort With A View
Oct 2018 • Couples
We stumbled upon the Fortezza by luck as we had parked our car nearby and intended to walk towards the city center. It is well worth it to carve a little time for a stroll around this masterpiece of a fort. It has absolutely stood the test of the time and the views from every corner of Siena are stunning.

Not a lot here
Oct 2018 • Couples
When visiting a fort there is an expectation of the history surrounding it.
Apart from a brief metal plaque on entry there is very little here, yes, views over the city, rampart walks and, not a lot else.
If time is short give it a miss

Walk on a rainy day
Oct 2018 • Couples
During our visit we had one overcast day with showers throughout. We didn't let this dampen or spirits and decided to instead have a walk a little further out as we had noticed this when we were at our pick up place the day before to go on a trip. It's not too far from the centre and a nice walk around the top with great views towards the city. It is a huge structure and and different notice boards with information in both Italian and English so we learnt a bit of the history too. We didn't spend too long, but walked along the walls and enjoyed the views. The path way is even and flat so easy for those who need access for pushchairs etc. They also have a huge outdoor market outside of it on a Wednesday as we noticed as we were getting a bus from Siena Tozzi a few days later so waked through some and had a look. Lots of clothes, bedding, fruit, fits etc.

Stunning views
Sep 2018 • Family
If you can find your way into the fortress there are great views, we just managed to walk all the way around the bottom looking for the way in. Free to get in and lovely views over Siena
